Sorry to bump this thread, but I really want to rewatch this thing in Open Matte and the Russian hybrid is not really cutting it.
No new sources have emerged this past years so I assuming this is the closest version we'll have of an official blu-ray compliant release.
Is this still recoverable from the dark pit?

I think the Russian version is attempting to add as much picture as possible to each frame using all those sources. Trying to get every shot open matte. I think but don't know, haven't seen it yet.

Mine is more like a Nolan film, it just opens up for the shots that had significant material (opening, cave troll, bridge entire ending and various other shots).
