The Image DVD sounds better than the Image LD IMO. The MGM mono I can admit is a bit better quality wise but the loudness and beefiness of the sound effects in the Image mono makes me prefer that version.
The quality of the MGM DVD mono + The loud and beefy sound effects of Image mono + restored and stereo music = me wanting a new 5.1 mix with the original mono sound effects from MGM.
Edit: I get your preferences. It’s just that Jim wanting to turn the first film’s sound into T2 just makes me frustrated. If you want to a new mix in 5.1, that’s fine but try to respect the original films initial mix, because when you try to take away history you make people mad at you.
