I wanted to test my own, first open matte complete restoration, so I took The Arrival DVD; deblocked, denoised, upscaled and grain plated; no color correction at all! http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/197852
I made it also to test how much time it will take for a "simple" project like this... it took six days - SIX... DAYS... luckily this time no problems at all during encoding process, like it happened lately...
The quality is not bad at all; the only problem is that I was forced to put a dozen repeated still frame to replace missing frames, and let it be in sync with all the previous audio and subs tracks; a small price to pay, I think...
It will be ready for release soon; must first finally pick up a new PC, and then (gulp!) prepare it to be THE definitive (read: the best I can afford for the moment, and it should last a long time) encoding machine!

Can't wait to see it spoRv. It can take that long to upscale too, so I feel for you there.
In reference to this project I finished Evil Dead 2 if anyone wants to see it. That and Back to the Future are done but I removed House since a new BD is coming out making an upscale redundant.

I'd love to see an upscale of the Winds of War/War and Remembrance miniseries. Would that be possible?

Seems as if Johnny Mnemonic gets a SD Open Matte Version as Bonus in the upcoming German Mediabook.
Maybe a Upscale would be quite nice... And a sync to the Dolby Atmosphere and Auro 3D Audio...

It was available as bonus since some time, in the Japanese BD IIRC; and I remember it's just a copy of the JP DVD, though. I thought also to do a reconstruction, using the SD just for scenes missing from the BD, but it's an hard work...

I was not talking on the japanese cut, but the international Cut as SD Open Matted Version. The ajapnese Cut was, IIRC in Widescreen SD.

Today I was looking among my DVDs, and guess what? I found that my Gattaca DVD (clearly stated as widescreen on the cover) is actually a flipper, widescreen on one side, fullscreen on the other (and also the writings on the disc itself are wrong, where side A is side B and vice versa...)
Well, I thought it was open matte, so I scanned briefly, and I think it's not pan&scan (apart slightly, in few shots), but instaed an open matte & cropped (a new definition! )
As you can see, in some shots the image is just the center (or the side) of the whole:
http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/articles/wi...imer2.html (third comparison)
while in others, like the missile launch, it is clearly open matte, losing something on a side (or both):

for the most part, the image is centered, with more details on top and bottom, and the sides cropped (from a bit to a lot).
So, may this worth a preservation? An AAP-AR version would be great, though, even if it will require a lot of patience... may someone be interested to accept this "mission"?

Wow, what plugins did you use? I'd like to use them for a couple of contributions I was thinking of making to the Project! Right now, I was thinking of doing The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut, both in their director-preferred open matte versions.
