Die Hard - New HD Master on Netflix?
WOW! I'm quite shocked to see the new UHD is not much improvement AND has duller color somewhat like the old 1989 letterbox LD release. Is there any loss in the HDR downconversion or have they simply pulled an old master?

The framing shows it's the same as the Netflix remaster, but colorwise it doesn't seem to look like it, which is a pity, unless it has to be seen in HDR to look right, but I can't tell you that 'cause I'm not equiped for that.

UHD often looks dull in terms of color if the conversion is not done properly (if, in fact, there is yet an agreed upon way of doing it properly), so my guess is that that's what happened. I'd be surprised if an old master was used.

Oh yes, apparently one should better beware of trying to compare HDR to SDR masterings by using a converted-to-SDR screenshot with a native one.

Had to learn that lesson when I went quite far out on a limb and raised a stink about how shitty the new color grading of Starship Troopers was on UHD compared to the Blu-ray in this forum where I built up my argument on what MadVR and other conversion schemes are making out of it.  Blush

Seems to highly depend on the nits mastering though - the lower the value, the less issues with blown highlights occur during the conversion.

More than that it's difficult to compare HDR content across different HDR displays due to the inherent differences in colour gamut, peak nits and individual HDR implementations. And that's before calibration!

It seems there are only a handful of displays that are considered 'legitimate' representations of HDR (and many reviews have to include disclaimers where HDR comes into play). I know some restoration experts are wary or unwilling to include an HDR pass due to the detrimental effect it can have on the colour grading, as well as the inability of many displays to hit the correct colourspace (which again will affect the grade).

If I had to guess I'd say the Netflix master was based on the DCP of the 4K restoration (which would have been SDR). Then for UHD blu ray it was given an HDR pass which may account for the differences, but that could also be down to HDR->SDR downconversion.

Apparently the iTunes 4K is SDR, has anyone checked it out yet?

I finally watched the 4k fully, as some one told me (Not Fox) that the 2.0 mix was on the disc!
It sounds amazing, I will need to A/B the laser tho

Going to compare the 2.0 mix in a bit.

If I remember correctly the giveaway different sound effect is when McClane first goes in the stairwell, the sound effect of the door comes out of the opposite side channel from where it is on screen in the original 2.0 track.

Earlier ones are: Argyle loading the cassette in the limo, and Hans dry firing the empty Beretta. Both of these were originally mixed to the right channel but were moved to the centre channel for the DVD remix. All LD mixes should have the original sound placement, varying only in source (35mm Lt-Rt or 70mm 6-Track).
