I watched it on my fairly new Optoma 1080p projector, and it was (in general) very forgiving of the original compression. One or two scenes did jump out as over-crunched - the first when John's feeling pretty f'n unappreciated and (I think) a shot of Holly towards the end. Might be worth just subbing in the dicey shots from the Blu, depending on how your other sources turn out.
As for your own compression, I seem to recall reading that the 'grain' preset is pretty old now, and not nearly as efficient for fine detail as 'film'. For what it's worth, I've been happy with the film preset for my own purposes, and I use loads of grain!

I think it's better not trying to change shots, since this is a different scan, it should be released warts and all until a better source comes along.
It sure beats the old Blu-ray scan. For me it's like watching it on TV, I don't want perfection, that would be a Blu-ray 4K release, I just wanna see the new scan that beats the old. The alternate soundtracks are awesome btw, pure gold. Thanks guys!

Thanks for all the feedback, especially regarding the encoding settings. Anything I can do to aid compatibility across different platforms is always going to be welcome.
Jonno, do you by any chance remember where the shot of Holly was that you mentioned? The scene where John feels 'unappreciated' was a case of the Netflix stream bumping down temporarily due to bandwidth going unnoticed by myself. I should be able to replace that sequence with a fresh capture. Whilst re-capturing I can test whether the encode is the same, if there are any variations it may be possible to average the captures.

I'm watching this now. As it happens, I saw a print – it must have been two or three years ago now. My impression of the BD was that the color timing wasn't far off what I saw. This Netflix version looks to be even closer: it's lovely and warm and feels very Eighties. Let's hope a new BD based on it isn't far off. In the meantime, I'm very happy to have this release from zoidberg. The PCM sounds great and is the perfect complement to the video. Nicely done!
