A few years ago, I watched Requiem for a Dream on Netflix, and it was 4:3 open matte in HD. I don't know if they've since changed the transfer. Maybe someone can check?

is there an open matte version of Sphere in the wild anywhere? according to IMDB it was shot with Super35.

I've managed to acquire a copy of the full-screen DVD of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory from 2005. I'll let you know if it's open-matte or pan-&-scan when I get it.

CONFIRMED! The Willy Wonka FS 2005 DVD is indeed open-matte! But it's kind of an unusual one - like the Harry Potter films, there are cases the top and bottom of the frame is opened up, but it appears that parts of the side you see in the widescreen version is chopped off. What do you reckon?

It happens often; it's quite difficult to find "real full open matte"; lately I found Timeline is in this category, but in two or three wide shots, it is cropped as well.

Willy Wonka seems not so bad in this way; Gattaca, for example, is way worst.

I've also had the chance to look at the Flintstones VHS. It appears to be a BTTF-type deal where most shots are open-matte except for optical/SFX shots which are pan-&-scan.

I'm pretty certain the Sailor Moon movies are also open matte for R1 releases from the DiC/Cloverway era. I'll have to make sure of that, of course, using my subtitled cassettes as a visual reference.
