[Proposal] Die Hard 2 - colour grading
#51
Yes saw all three original film on original releases. DH3 is the worst because it's zoomboxed on video. There's some trailers out there that shows more top.

The initial US letterboxed release is different from what I remembered. My copy is beat up so I've never really watched it in hopes of getting a better one.

It looks like the French disc. Completely without the overall color tint introduced in the THX master. However I think it may be a different transfer to the French disc as it appears more balanced in its color overall and not as pale. The THX disc resolves color and fine detail better but adds a blanket tint across the entire film that is likely correct but overdone. Also it seems a touch hazy to my eyes. All of this is fixed on the BD which is the same source as the THX master I think and corrects the color tone back to where it should be while providing better blacks.

Sometimes it helps to use old masters for BD and be lazy. DH1 and 2 seem to be relatively untouched HD versions of their older counterparts with all the warts removed.

So if we can obtain a 35mm sample it should indicate whether the colder/paler look of the older LDs is correct or the later THX or BD look.

None of those films were correct on THX versions. They were doctored to look good on tube TVs. There is no reasonable prez of how they looked in the theaters.

Agree. There was a time when I thought THX was doing only great things... then I grew up... Wink

It seems the CE version of the DH2 has the closet look to that youtube clip. That is being very blue. So I might use that and waterslides' LD cap as the two versions. Can anyone cap the old US widescreen LD's PCM track? I have the THX capped but want to see if the original is different like DH is.

I just started an approach to DH2 from a different perspective.

We have all have noticed some 35mm prints on ebay that look a lot different then their home video master equivalent. That is not a surprise. Problem is these prints are too expensive to buy. So I had the thought why not look at the trailers. Sure it's often said that a trailer might not be fully color timed but that doesn't mean that they are wrong all the time. In fact some of the 35mm trailer scans I have seen match 35mm prints pretty well.. So I have been collecting a few 35mm trailers and hand scanning them to see what they look like. Or I was until my computer went belly-up and I had to spend all my money fixing that. Luckily I got a few month into this project before that happened.

Anyway the mechanics of this is best lead to another thread I will post but I post here since I did this with DH2. The trailer is this one:

And here are a few of the shots from the trailer:

You can see this points to the CE's blue as being the most "correct". That DH2 is suppose to have a blue tint oppose to the redder, warmer look the BD has. So I went a little further and took those 35mm shots and the dozens of other shots and created a LUT that reflected them.

BD/Regrade

Now this is just a rough test and it needs some further adjustments but this uses that 35mm trailer LUT, 30% of the luma from the BD and balanced scopes to remove the red in the highlights. I used a bit of the BD's luma to tame the regrade's heavy contrast look but still keep it 35mm looking. Overall its a more extreme looking version of the CE DVD which I now think is the closest to what DH2 looked like in theaters. Far from perfect but I believe one step closer.

It's also interesting to note that this is somewhat the look of DH in 35s also. That in the original they skewed to a cool, blue look.

I'll post some other 35mm trailer scans in another thread.
