interesting articles about the topic:

Notes:
  • these version are NOT simply the color ones, desaturated (read: you can't obtain them just putting the color setting of your display to zero); they have different contrast and brightness, and regraded scene by scene
  • using the luma of the black & white version along with the chroma of the color version, a different, color version could be obtained

Logan Noir is definitely on my list to watch... I recently watched the theatrical version as a refresher. Will be watching Noir soon, I think.

Hi, I have 'The Mist' B&W and I think, the B&W isn't good for the movie because the movie is set in current times. If the movie was set in the 80's or more in the past the B&W would much better.

So, Logan and Fury Road would be even worst... Happy

I do not agree: there isn't a "time frame" where a B&W movie should be placed; it works regardless - if it works, of course!

Remember if they could have shot in colour back then they would have. B&W has a mood all of it's own.

Also if people are trying their own B&W conversions they should be thinking in terms of RGB/CYM as opposed to YUV.

I've seen both Logan and Fury Road and I don't think I would enjoy Logan in B&W, however because Fury Road isn't current-times, I think it *might* look good.

Time-frame doesn't always matter with B&W, however, I think time-frame can be very distracting for B&W, especially for a movie rather than a photo.

Edit: I don't know of a movie that is available in both B&W and color that looks better in B&W and is set in current-times. Fury Road may be the only one, however I haven't seen it in B&W and Fury Road isn't set in current-times.

Another movie I like, Pi, is B&W, however it's only available in B&W and was shot on 16mm, I think, so B&W works because of the grain and picture quality, and subject matter.

Can I make a suggestion....

Something that crossed my mind was doing Peter Jackson's King Kong in Black & White. Whilst also for the Digital effects Shots of Kong delete every other Frame that make him look like stop motion and re-time. Excise silly over the top shots.

I tested it in Black and white and I thought it was a big improvement and really got a lot of nostalgia.

Pretty Flawed film but I think it could really be quite simple to fix it and it to be much much better.

Anyway cool idea for a project and probably fairly simple.

This movie exists both in color and black & white.

According to IMDB:

Quote:The movie was filmed in color, then printed in black and white by special processing. However, at least one print was released with the first reel in normal color due to an error at the lab.

I wonder if the whole film exists in color...

The whole film does exist in color, at least on DVD. The producers insisted on it for the video market. There was a 3 DVD edition released in France that included it. And Canal+ had aired both versions back in the day.
