They might have corrected the color of the outside of the Nostromo for the home video after realising that it changed inconsistently from scene to scene. I can understand that.
On the brightness of the planet though, I can't get accustomed to the darker version. I should check my 1999 DVD but in my memory it was always brighter.

Well I had a little set back. I sent some people a copy of the completed MKV and it was pointed out there were errors, looking like compression errors. Going back a step to the graded AVI looks like they are there too but not in the upgraded AVI but I can't nail down were anything is. It looks like the regrading is making something in the original file more visible. So, I'm not sure yet what to do but trying to sort it out.

Oh dear! Could it be something to do with the compression of the regrade reference?

That's what I thought but when I re-ran everything, the compression checked out fine.

In looking closer I think its posterization and/or banding (from the 8-bit). It exists in the original BD encode but it hidden in the shadows. You can see it when you boost the levels on the original BD video. My encode boasts the shadows in a few shots and made it more apparent. So I'm trying to correct the shadows and try again.

That's a shame that your corrections are revealing problems with the source. Good luck finding the right balance between the two.
