There should be a script.avs in your sub2bd folder that was generated from the last subtitle you tried. You can try running that script in AVS directly and see if it works.

AVSEdit Plus will let you run a script and hopefully return an error message that helps.

The cmd window sometimes hangs like that for me, but I'm always able to get it going by adding a space or a blank line before the first line and after the last line of the subtitle script. In my case, I'm always using Japanese scripts (for kanji reading practice), so I assume the program doesn't like it when a script starts/ends with a double-byte character or something.

If you can send me an example of one I could see about automating that. Yes, you can try that.
Also, you should try BusterD's suggestion of adding blank lines at the start and end of your .ass file. Thanks given by: BusterD
