Night Of The Living Dead Criterion Blu-Ray Release - 2016 Copyright at end of film

(2018-04-19, 07:53 PM)TomArrow Wrote: Never saw this restauration, but if you want, you can send me that part of the movie (Avidemux can cut out that part losslessly) and a replacement from another version of the movie that doesn't have this and I'll try to fix it with AutoOverlay, DrDre's ColorMatch and After Effects and let you have the fixed segment in some high bitrate format you can reencode.

I will cut the part out of the new version and an older version and get it ready to send to you. What delivery way do you prefer?

I ask because the film looks amazing and is for sure the best release to date… but a 2016 copyright is splattered on the screen as the bodies burn at the very end. Kinda takes me out of the film. Petty I know but it is what it is. I am not quite up to the task but I would think lots of people here could do it pretty easily and fast. All that would need to be done is to patch out the copyright with perfectly aligned HD footage from another BD release. Maybe slight color correction. I have the video to work with if anyone would like to do this project.

PS: And yes I know why the 2016 copyright was placed there… to copyright the new restoration done lately. No need to explain that part.

Actually, they can't copyright a restoration. This was discussed on OT. Night of the Living Dead is public domain, so is the Criterion restoration. Their copyright notice is frivolous.

Which in turn makes this copyright even more stupid. I don't see the point at all. Maybe a copyright after the film ends.

Thanks for taking this on. So since the film is public domain I'm guessing it will be ok to post a download link here when it's done. Big Grin

The film may be, but the master may not be. The us copyright law is kind of tricky. Or you just get sued by an European company...

As I understand it the film (ie intellectual property) is public domain. Anyone who has access to original materials can make a master and put it out there for public viewing. From what I can gather certain restorations, editing changes etc. can make public domain films eligible for a new copyright for that individual instance, this is the case for Criterion NotLD (licensed by MoMA/Image Ten). It's a similar situation to Triumph of the Will (as restored by Robert A. Harris).

Does anyone remember when they tried to re-establish a copyright by changing the movie into the much beloved Wink 30th Anniversary edition

I might need a few pointers on re-inserting the corrected frames back into the film after TomArrow corrects them. I do edit films sometimes but I am still learning a few things. I would need to know how to do it as lossless as possible. Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated and will enable me to fix other films myself.
