Can anyone help out with the 1st Region 1 release of The Shining?
It contains the movie in 4:3 and has the original mono mix.

Many thanks Smile

I suppose you’re talking about this OOP (not remastered), aren’t you?…

Below we see Dolby Digital Mono and 144 min. According to imdb it should be 146, but I think it’s the most complete release, and the one I’m looking for.

Yup. There's another one in basically identical packaging that has "Stereo" instead so watch out for that.

The one in the image is the DVD you have or you have both? I only have the shorter (and stereo) European release.

The one in the image should be the correct one with the mono, I'm just saying that there is another one which looks basically identical apart from "stereo" instead of "mono" in tiny text on the back. I found one on eBay that I thought was the original mono but there were no photos of the back; asked the seller for a pic and it said stereo. Apart from that the packaging is pretty much exactly the same, so I'm just saying watch you don't accidentally buy a stereo copy if you want the mono.

Not this...

In any case, all the 1999 Kubrick DVD's are supposedly the old Laserdisc masters.

Some home video editions have blue end credits and others white end credits.

There were two very close releases, 1999 box set which was the LD masters and Kubrick before he died approved.
Then there was the 2001 version where they remixed the tracks but still left the masters in 4/3 widescreen.
Then much later, then re-released their same crappy remixed tracks now in 16/9 DVDs. (Even though back in 2001 they sweared Kubrick would have hated anamorphic enhancement because the perspective would have changed, quote Vitali on that).
Then they released the Blu-ray versions which were the last DVDs masters.
It's all a mess once he died.
I bought the original Box Set for 10 bucks, and don't bother anymore on any other remaster.

I also bought Kubrick's complete filmography on DVD about 20 years ago but I realized that “The Shining” is the European cut with the horrible 5.1 mix. The 1999 release is possibly the best of all, I don't think the 146-minute cut has been released.
