[versions] Star Wars saga in UHD
#11
Interesting, so I guess they upgraded it from 1440x1080 to 1920x1080 in the R-version. My bad for assuming that stayed the same.

I wouldn't call that an upgrade. 1440x1080 and 1920x1080 are the same thing. The first one just being the anamorphic version.

Well, yeah, but when we're talking about the footage being suited for a reasonable big 2K master, then it kind of makes a little bit of a difference I guess, in terms of horizontal resolution.

But of course the other factor is the resolution of the 3D renders & stock footage too.

Well, to me 1920 = 1.33x 1440... if you don't call it an upgrade, I don't know what! Happy

It was a bit misleading in vertical... this is better IMHO:

yet, 1 pixel out of 4 is interpolated, so... Big Grin

You can call it anamorphic and you aren't wrong, but you still get less horizontal resolution. Also, the resampling from 1440x1080 to 1920x1080 likely also has a slight sharpness toll in itself, as you can for example similarly notice when you take a sharp image and resample it only by 1 pixel, there's still some loss.

This may be a smaller problem with anamorphic *film*, as it doesn't strictly speaking have a fixed resolution.

Not saying it's unacceptable, but hey.

Waiting for EP1 4K (or higher) scan, I've found a so-called UHDrip... it seems a (very simple) upscale from BD, where any hardware upscaler could eventually do better... so, I can't resist the challenge, and did my own "version" - thrown there also a custom regrade, just for the sake of it! Wink

Also, gave a try to EP2 - HDTV bilinear Vs mine:

Problem #1: do you see a lot of difference viewing it 1x? I do see, but maybe because I have the restoration fever, or very picky...

Problem #2: it will take A LOT to do that for a whole movie... first takes around two minutes, while second four minutes, for EACH FRAME! Eek - so, 8 months and half up to 17 months to make a SINGLE MOVIE!  Thrilled

That looks impressive, spoRv. Maybe cropping it before doing the job and then reinstate the black bars could save some time?
