wouldn't the 1998 Non-Anamorphic DVD release's AC-3 track of Mission: Impossible be Identical to the Laserdisc Version?

Probably. Anyone have it?

I recall doing an A/B when it came out. The LaserDisc was better. But hey, that was 20 years ago.
Some early DVDs were the same masters but I noted tons that used the fold down features of AC3 to totally screw with the sound and were definitely worse than their LaserDisc counterparts. I don’t trust many of them. BandD

It's cheap and quick to confirm if they're better, though, and they may well be.

I noticed during a 35mm screening that we could clearly hear Ethan's feet touching the desk in the silent computer heist scene. These step sounds are quite muted on the current mix. Listening through some DTS samples now. Yep. When he flips and the foot hits the computer desk, clear as day from the left channel. Whew, this track sounds great in DTS! I picked it up just to check from a local store. The letterbox transfer however is the LD nonanamorphic master so if you want to see that digitally, you essentially get a single layered DVD with it and the pan n scan version separately encoded. Of course you get the dvd era nasties and such but not so badly. I would have thought the audio would have been the same but it sadly isn't. This may be where the remixing happened in the first place. Also included is a Dolby surround lossy 2.0 track.

Hi guys, are we still interested in capturing this AC-3 track?

Sure! It's a classic and definitely deserves preservation.

Yep still interested!

Okay no worries. I'll capture this in the not-too-distant future.
