The Italia 1 promo footage does look quite poor for HD - so poor that I'm seriously wondering whether it's just upconverted from SD! I hope the actual version they show isn't going to be an upconvert, but we'll find out, now won't we?

I would love to see a regraded version of the best 2D source. It'd be the best possible presentation, until poita's long-gestating 35mm scan project is finished.
Funny that you mention that TServo2049 because BTTF is actually going to be one of my next releases, regrading the very nice looking DCP source to more closely match the colours and fleshtones of the DVD release which I really like the look of.
I was checking out this Jurassic Park thread to see if I could help out in any way but it looks like you've got things well in hand Andrea, nice work overlaying those two sources! Very much looking forward to your final release!

Yeah, that Italia1 promo footage looks like a poorly upscaled source (almost like it was just a bicubic resize)
That being said, if it has decent colors, it still could be used as a color reference... Also, granted a 5-6mbps stream isn't going to be marvelous, but I have seen some that (using AVC and NOT mpeg) that still manage to look pretty decent. Wondering if the actual broadcast will have more details than that promo...

I recorded Mad Max trilogy, and I can assure the quality - to be a poor 5/6mbps AVC HDTV capture - is great; compared to BD, only tiniest details were lost, but they were really tiny... in comparison, these screenshots are carp - not the fish, just a kind anagram
Eventual use as color reference will work quite well even with a low quality capture like the one found in the spot...

OK, finally finished to record all three movies...
good news: for the first time, I see a small logo on Italia 1 SD, telling that an HD version is available on Italia 1 HD (just for the first film); so, it *should* mean that, without that indication, Italia 1 HD (and so Rete 4 HD and Canale 5 HD) broadcast only upscaled version... quality is quite good, not like WOWOW or Canal+, but please, take your time to zoom up and let me know what do you think: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/130474
bad news: broadcast get interrupted a bit after half movie, so I decided to continue to record in SD... futile decision, as the color grading is the same of WOWOW; picture is open matte, but is zoomed in, so have just few lines more on top and bottom, but less on both sides...
Started making some further tests for the eventual final project; this time I took both WOWOW and Canal+, deblock them, overlay them (WOWOW 75%, Canal+ 25%), sharpened a bit and added a grain plate:

Wait, so a better, non-de-logo'ed Canal+ was found? Excellent! How does it look compared to the WOWOW?
The "after" looks great.

Yep! Thanks to a great person that pointed me to the right place!!!
Other comparisons:
WOWOW Vs Canal+

Canal+ Vs Test 01 (same as previous comparison)

Disregard the fact Canal+ logo is still there in the Test 01 - hey, it's a test, afterall!
