Big Trouble In Little China (John Carpenter, 1986) – 35mm Scan

Eastman stock from '82 would be fading by now, unless it's been stored immaculately this whole time

I wouldn't know. I'd have to ask the collector himself about its condition since it's left unlabeled. You never know though, could actually be in surprisingly good condition if it's been right stored all these years as you've said.

Was there ever a need for a scan of The Thing?

Thanks for your pledge, I have noted it down!

There wasn't a need necessarily, but there are minor disputes over the color grading that's been sort of worsened by the fact that Dean Cundey ended up approving several different transfers of the movie over the years, each with their own color grading (the consensus at least seems to be that the Shout! Factory color timing is wrong though).

However, that's not to say it isn't in the cards theoretically. Although I'd much rather get other John Carpenter movies scanned over The Thing, such as The Fog, the collector I am sourcing my prints from does seem to have it ("THING, THE (1982)- SCOPE, Eastman, 6rls* # ^").

So supposing you do the quick cost calculation to account for rental, shipping, scanning, and FilmGuard, the total would come up to around $970. So in theory, with this information, you could start a preservation thread for the movie yourself; I'm sure a number of folks out there would like to see that happen (and I could PM you more sensitive details on this if you are interested and plan on pressing on with this idea).

I appreciate the details you've passed. I'm not in a position to instigate such a project. Happy to participate, though. Smile

Unrelated, does anyone know what has happened to TheStarWarsTrilogy forums? I thought they were down, but it now asks for my username and password but doesn't let me in.

Edit: williarob has let me know.

Just like to post that I've gotten a new donation recently and that unfortunately I'll have to bump up the goal a smidge to account for the costs of a new hard drive for the scans.

So a bit of news, I have been talking with a few associates about their rates on scanning lately and an interesting development came out of it that'll help this preservation for sure. We've managed to work out a bit of a compromise where the scanning fees and rate will go by a reel by reel basis. Meaning, with the current amount of funding pledged to the pot, we have enough to cover the rental fee of the print as well as the scanning of the first reel. Our hopes are that once that first reel gets scanned, it'll entice more folks to help out and chip in to see the scan reach eventual completion.

So anyways, with that said, I am currently contacting those who've pledged to collect funds to send over to the scanner and whatnot.

Hopefully now we'll be able to see some real progress with this. And on a further upside with this forum in particular, with the first reel scanned, hopefully it'd help anyone's ventures into regrading one of the HD masters to the print colors.

A Reel 1 Preview is available for donors!

If y’all want to see this and more reels in the future, please donate so we can pay our beloved scanner the fees to release the second reel!
