Lord of the Rings reconstruction
#1
I know there have been some projects here that set out to fix Lord of the Rings.
I've recently got the 4k set, and am curious if any projects based on fixing the films are currently in progress.

I've heard a lot of the complaints about the 4k set, and while I appreciate the uptick in resolution and bitrate, the DNR and edge enhancement have cost some detail.
I looked at posts on Adywan's wordpress, and saw what he was doing with Return of the Jedi, assembling his own master of that movie combining the current home video release, with the 2011 release in order to have a master that DNR didn't totally fuck on certain shots.

With Return of the King's 4k there was one shot in particular, that's on display Caps a Holic, and shows where Gandalf's staff is smeared out, and there is a temporal artifact left by a horse.
So, other than replacing that shot with a prior bluray's version, are there any other approaches that could be used to fix that shot?
Rotoscoping and painting perhaps?

Also, is there a color profile that anyone could share from the prior DVD release of the extended editions of the films?
The first DVDs I bought were those, and I'm in love with the color pallete from those versions of the films, I don't have the DVDs anymore, sadly.

Edit

I'm aware that these are 2k upscaled to 4k, with maybe the exception of Fellowship.

Frankly, with how bad the UHDs are, you may as well just upscale the normal blu-rays since any detail that would've been revealed from the master in the 4K has been essentially scrubbed out of existence. From there, I guess you could just Dr. Dre Color Match the blu-rays to the DVD releases.

There is some detail that upticks on the 4k release, so I'm thinking about going shot by shot, and downscaling to 2k.
I still need the color profiles for Dre's tool though.

If I'm not mistaked the DVDs of TTT and RotK should match the blu rays, colour space differences notwithstanding, as they were both finished fully as DIs for their theatrical releases.

The only outlier is FotR as it was partial DI with the rest lab timed for it's theatrical release, hence the IP scan for the theatrical blu

Jackson made some major changes on certain scenes of TTT and ROTK.

Yes I understand that all the films were changed for the UHD release, my point was that anyone after the theatrical colours of TTT or RotK need look no further than the blus

Fair enough, I wondered if anything was changed on the blus, it's been so long since I've seen the DVD release.
As always I figure Fellowship is the biggest offender.
