Mulan (1998) DVD/LD audio request

The original R2/4s use a different film transfer than the non-anamorphic DVD and the HDTV/Spain iTunes masters do. The R2 UK DVDs had a headbutt trimmed to retain a lower age rating (a first pressing of the 2000 UK DVD was uncut as it used the R2/4 disc with foreign language options, when a later pressing with the cuts made was R2 and English audio only).

I don't have the Gold Collection DVD, but I do remember borrowing from one of the libraries I go to a couple years ago.

I just discovered that the 5.1/7.1/Atmos mix on the DVD/Blus have a different closing credits song compared to the theatrical 5.1 mix and probably the DS mix too. I also remembered that the Walt Disney Pictures logo at the end on the 1999 DVD/VHS is shorter, whereas on the 2004 DVD/Blu/UHD it's the full version that plays timed to the end of the alternate song. I figure this was a DHET change, but then I also heard some of the foreign dubs on the original R2/4 DVDs have it too so INS.

Partial update and a question about sync choice:

The UHD DTHD 7.1-Atmos embedded DD 5.1 640kbps features the exact same mix as the BD DTS-HD MA 5.1 track at a slightly lower level (so the BD is a little louder)
The R3 DD 5.1 384kbps features a slightly different mix with relatively higher levels on fronts and center than the two previous mixes.

Now for the question, in order not to decode, I a have to make a choice in which the resynced audio would run either -5ms or +5ms from the target track. I know it's such a slight difference, but is there a general principal among experienced syncers which is preferable? Running ahead or behind the target?

The R3 DVD, is that the English track or a foreign dub? Do both tracks have the different song at the end with a long WDP logo, or the theatrical ending song with a shortened WDP logo?

Yes. If you think logically, sound travels slower than light, right? If you see something that makes a noise, you see it before you hear it, more so the further away you are (think stadium concerts). So if in doubt, I always go slightly later rather than slightly earlier. But you're correct, +/- 5 ms shouldn't matter either way, realistically.

Thanks pipefan413!

SpaceBlackKnight,

Thanks for the new info!

Yeah, all the comparisons I've made so far are among English tracks. Also, the end song is identical in everyone of them, including the AC-3 2.0 320kbps of the BD.

Interesting. How does the closing credits music differ exactly? I assume you are basing this off the HDTV capture.

Btw the English 5.1 track on the R3 DVD is 448kb/s, not 384.

Halfway quoting from "Die Hard" - it is almost Christmas time, the best time for wonders and wishes. Wink

Bought it from a Japanese store for 108¥ - the nice cover alone is worth collecting that LD although it lacks the English original audio.

The Japanese PCM track I've already preserved with love so to say, so almost only one PM is seperating you from this one.

Oh damn, nice one! I almost bought one but I didn't really have the ~$60 to drop on it when it appeared, and not having the English audio anyway made it financially daft for me personally. Thanks for grabbing it.

Agree that the cover was honestly the main thing that made me want a copy hahaha

Very true indeed!

I love LD packing, the jacket should be a thing of beauty!

I mistankenly thought it had English PCM and Japanese Analog. But I'll sure take your offer and do my best to work a sync along the other tracks. Thanks a lot!

I had the first DVD of Mulan, and I can't remember what I did with it once I upgraded to the 2-disc Special Edition.

In regards to the SE, according to DVDizzy:
Quote:In the sound department, Mulan is offered in Dolby Digital 5.1, with four languages to choose from (English, French, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese!). The audio is a little subdued, and certainly not as active as an Enhanced Home Theater Remix (which was mentioned in its press release, apparently in error). But there's definitely some power to this track. There's a good amount of bass present. Dialogue sounds full and entirely natural. The songs are crisp and often the most lively parts of the soundtrack. Even if the audio seems dominated by the front speakers, this soundtrack does convey things strongly and exhibits satisfying detail.

The packaging does not say there is a DEHT mix and neither does the disc's menu which just calls the track "English", not even 5.1 or DD. Since it's something Disney makes a big deal of when present, I suspect it was advertised, but never made it to the final disc.

The SE is THX certified as well.
Also, the Mandarin track is mentioned in the specifications on the packaging, so it wasn't a 'hidden' feature.

If you still need any of those audio tracks, let me know.

Thanks a lot Doctor M! All info is much appreciated!

Work is already on the way with the R3 SE DVD English 5.1 track. Once it's done I'll apply the same cuts to the Mandarin track (since it's a dub track on an animated picture and there's no Mandarin guide track on the UHD, I think it's the best approach).

But since you have offered, I'd apprecaite the English and Mandarin tracks to compare with the R3. I bet they're the same, but I've been wrong taking such approach before. It's rare, but I've encountered home video releases by the same distributor and under the same label (Special Edition, Ultimate Edition, etc) that have carried different mixes under the same labeled track (English 5.1 for instance).

As for the Japanese LD PCM kindly provided by little-endian, I'm still not sure how to approach it. If anyone has the Japanese dub of the japanese BD it would be the ideal situation to use as guide. The BD tracks only need an inital delay to adjust to the UHD.
