Wow! Never thought they would take the time to restore this.

(Also never thought that Paramount would release the original theatrical cut of The Godfather III).

It seems Paramount has taken down the trailer for some reason.

So the trailer is back up.

It including two new effects shots which has V'Ger orbiting Earth and having the Enterprise at V'Ger pyramid rocks thing at the end of the film. The big question is did they change the CGI effects of the original DC? Both of those shots are clearly all new work while some other shots look like the original DVD work.

I thought they still had the original files from the DVD and were just going to re-render them in 4K? The new shots look kind of awful to me and not the subtle and well blended to the model work like the original DC work was. V'Ger now looks like a Christmas tree that took too much acid and set itself on fire.

Perhaps that was the director's original intent  Big Grin

It's all-new CGI. The shot of Vulcan looks quite nice, the rest ranges from ok (pyramid rocks), to plastic/fake (San Francisco), to downright hideous (V'Ger Christmas Tree). The grading is all over the place too - flat and purple for the film stock, overexposed and ultra-poppy for the new CGI. Paramount really have plummeted in terms of their film restorations ever since their disastrous remaster of To Catch a Thief in 2020. The new 4K Godfather colour revisionism is just the latest in its continuing line of mess-ups.

The only interest I have in this ST:TMP DE release is if the UHD has the same Special Longer Version deleted scenes on the disc, like the old DVD did. Would grab it for those.

Off topic I wasn't aware of this. What are the issues with that remaster?

Scrubbed grain, cropped image, an astonishing lack of detail, washed out/blue colours:

Yeah @TheLoon is totally right.

To Catch a Thief was really nuts. It would be pretty straightforward to do better than the HD transfer but like…. They scrubbed a Vistavision negative (which isn’t crazy grainy) to the point that it literally had less detail than the Blu-Ray. Very bizarre choice.

I would be interested to compare this with the latest 4K remaster of ST: TPM which was also a tad too bright for my eyes.
