To Catch a Thief was really nuts. It would be pretty straightforward to do better than the HD transfer but like…. They scrubbed a Vistavision negative (which isn’t crazy grainy) to the point that it literally had less detail than the Blu-Ray. Very bizarre choice.

I would be interested to compare this with the latest 4K remaster of ST: TPM which was also a tad too bright for my eyes.

Comparing the theatrical 4K to the trailer (which admittedly probably does not have final colors for the DE), it looks to mostly follow the existing colors, but they have tamped down the brightness on some darker interiors.

Also looks like they have reverted (at least in one instance) the DNR that Paramount used on the effects shots on the theatrical UHD. (difficult to tell for any other shot, since the DE trailer itself is DNR'd/low bitrate for the YouTube upload). If they did that across the board, it would make for a genuinely really nice master.

Thanks for posting the comparison shots. I have a feeling I’m going to hold on to your project for awhile longer, iguanaclerk.

Those are doubleofive's, he has a whole comparison account on twitter at StarTrekVisComp. Whatever we end up thinking of how they redo the CGI (some of it looks very nice, but those California mattes are rough, they should have commissioned someone to do a digital matte painting), the new scan is gorgeous and thoroughly supersedes this 20-some year old scan, so it will be nice to have all the footage in that quality (for the disc release, it sounds like they are including both the SLV deleted scenes and previously unseen materials from new scans).

The colour timing for 6 on the new set is an absolute mess

Overall the transfer is light years better than the old Blu-ray.  If you compare the new 4K to the 1999 DVD or the LD, it's certainly a lot closer to that.  I found that the key to unlocking it is the Dolby Vision grading.  I've played it back on a few displays so far, the the one with DV looked the best.  The 4K HDR display was meh, and Kodi tone mapping and outputting to my 1080p projector via a nVidia Shield looked great too.  At least it looks like film again.

The master is better.
Everyone is orange, the space shots are way too bright and colour filters are missing at the begining and on Rura Penthe

I am working on a hybrid cut of the DE and SLV versions of TMP but unfortunately I don't have a 4k player so at present, since there is no bluray of the SLV, I have only HD scenes from the TC bluray and upscaled standard definition outtakes for the SLV (plus Vernon Wilmer's spacewalk scene with CGI matte). I really want to see what the new scenes in the 4k SLV look like, as in how much more they have been cleaned up and brightened, and what the new official Enterprise matte looks like.
