Dumb question. What's the best way to demux a hevc files from a MKV while keeping the DV intact?

No matter how you demux it the DV should stay intact. I have done it before successfully using mkvextract.

MKVMerge works for me, just avoid the mistake I made intially and make sure you're using the latest version!

Anyone have a guide on how to convert say a web-DL DV file into something more palatable to most players? I'm working with something that is the dreaded purple/green on any playback device I own. Can this tool even solve this problem?

Sounds like it doesn't have a compatible HDR10 layer.

The way I know now is to convert the DV only file to SDR.

For this use case, I’d be totally ok with this. Is there a guide to follow on how to do this?

In the past I used jellyfin's custom ffmpeg:

Code:
ffmpeg -init_hw_device opencl -i input.mkv -vf "hwupload,tonemap_opencl=tonemap=bt2390:desat=0:peak=100:format=nv12,hwdownload,format=nv12" -c:v libx264 -c:a copy -crf 18 "output.mkv"

It still appears to be the simplest way but it can have some problems with the whites being blow out. Adjusting the peak lower or changing the tonemapping setting helps fix some of that. Testing is needed.

It appears now you can do it with DoVi_Scripts, a series of tools that I'm just getting into myself:

and it seems that FFMPEG proper will have the function eventually.
