Well, expect a rather long post from me about this within the next few hours after the last video for this is rendered. There will be many fun things brought up such as:
- differences between the framing of LD and BD footage
- differences in color-timing
- differences in the frame count of shots in LD vs BD
- sources, with links, for the original WOW THX laserdisc (entire thing, not just the 7:38 montage) that is available for streaming online (although audio is slightly out-of-sync)
- side-by-side comparison (with frame number imprinted on video) of the LD vs BD "HD reconstruction" hybrid
- links to project stuff will follow soon after that and will be available as fast as my upload speed will allow

Ok, so when viewing the side-by-side I noticed that the border on the top of frame moves depending on source of video on the HD reconstruction and I might need to fix that first. Also, the last shot is a little off but not sure if I can fix easily...
Today I got a lot of personal sh*t to do and will resume work tonight, but for now, here's a 720p SBS LDvsBD comparison:

Had a look Jerry, looks great.
So interesting to see the colour palette from the Star Wars Trilogy on the LD.

Yeah, that was before the "specialized" editions...
Anyway, after some PMs with DoomBot, this little project is being put on hold until we have a proper capture of the LD video, as there are a couple of elements that are needed from it (due to the fact that it's unique to the LD) and if something is to be done, it should be done right. On that note, I also plan on using Harmy's restoration footage for the SW parts of the video.
Don't get me wrong, this is still coming together and will be released. In fact, most of the editing (as seen in the side-byb-side) is already done. The PCM audio from the LD (thanx again to Lil Brutto for supplying this) is synced and ready to go
Another reason that I am willing to hold off on this for a week, is the fact that I need to render a video in one of my other projects. Granted, it will take up 200GB, once done, BUT it will free up over 500GB in temp files that I have, so still a savings of over 300GB and I only have 213GB left on the temp drive. That render will take about 48-55 hours (there are four different video source elements, all LAGS 1080p lossless, being hybrid-cut/overlayed together with numerous filters and cropping/framing adjustments)
Once that's done, since I'll have some free space again, I will finish most of the HD reconstruction using the "Harmy" elements and then we'll wait on Lil Brutto. NO RUSH at all as I need to finish this stuff first. I have numerous other projects I'm working on (in various stages of completion) and the temp files can take up a HUGE amount of space. Sucks having to use multiple drives... Wish I had a 500TB drive to have everything in one place, LOL

Hypothetically speaking, if I had a SSD what would be the ideal format for capturing LD video?

Isn't prores designed for HD formats?

Excuse my ignorance here, but can someone clarify for me; what is the benefit of using prores for SD material versus using something like LAGS or MagicYUV?
Keep in mind, that for HD material, especially when scanning film, I understand the need for prores and am only asking about SD material
@ Doombot - on topic on my continuing this project:
I am done with the first render of my other project, which has freed up some space, but I need to do a second render for the other half. (too many video sources and filters, used simultaneously, make Sony Vegas crash [due to RAM issues - even though I got 4GB, it's not enough sometimes])
Once that is finished, I need to encode a BD-compliant AVC video stream, which will take about 12-16 hours. Then I will be able to free up even more space on the HDD, at which point I will resume working on this (and it'll be time for some more temp files for this project to take up the HDD, as I do ALL of my editing on "lossless intermediary" files instead of working with lossy sources.) I expect to resume work on this before the next weekend

Yeah LAGS or MagicYUV would be better for capturing if he has the room, but then sharing he could use prores.
I have 16gb of ram and sometimes that's not enough, i still want to max it out at 32gb. Well take your time no need to rush this out. At least your making progress on another project.
