Hook (1991) Stereo mix synced to 4K & Blu-ray |

I took the stereo mix from the first DVD release of 'Hook' and synced it to the 4K release and the original Blu-ray release, since they both have their pros and cons.
There was one tiny edit difference between those two releases near the last third of the film which resulted in having to create two different audio files, one for each.
When you equalize the volume with both the 5.1 and 7.1 remix i still think this stereo mix sounds better. Especially the dialogue in many scenes sounds clearer and John Williams' great score is much better mixed with the rest of the sfx. I even read someone thought the score was also buried too deep in the new 7.1 Atmos remix.
Ironic how a 256kbps AC3 file can sound better than a modern 7.1 Atmos mix. Bit that's just my opinion. Let me know if you want to check it out for yourself!

Not a movie i particularly love. But it's good fun.
I actually think the DTS-HD MA 2.0 track is a downmix of the 5.1 track on the 4K release. Because when i compared it to the stereo mix from the DVD i noticed in a few scenes there were less engine roars than on the 4K 2.0 track. And in some scenes the score by John Carpenter is also less buried in the mix on the DVD than on the 2.0 track on the 4K release. It's also slightly less noise reduced which is a win in my book!
I converted it to a 16-bit .wav file
Just let me know if you're interested : )

I took the stereo mix from the first DVD release of 'Speed' and synced it to the 4K release. A very different mix compared to the DTS-HD MA 5.1 track. I guess it comes down to preference which sounds better to you.
It should sync to the remastered BD as well.
I converted it to a 16-bit .wav file.
Let me know if you're interested.

French Cancan (1955) (Custom colour & Hybrid audio) |

Overview:
French Cancan is my favourite of all Renoir’s films. Unfortunately, the most recent restoration by Gaumont suffers from the usual teal leanings and is very murky.
I’ve attempted to colour correct the footage to have a more neutral white balance, using the earlier DVDs as reference, as I believe this is how Renoir would have intended the film to be seen. I corresponded with one of the film's most ardent defenders, Tag Gallagher, who was able to back up the assertion that this is how the film's colour would have originally appeared.
I have also boosted the shadows on the restoration to improve on the murky look it has (although there’s only so far this can be pushed). The old Criterion DVD has its colour issues too, looking too green in parts, and yet other sections look like they’ve been ‘over corrected’ with regard to white balance.
For the audio, I found that the Australian Madman DVD had *marginally* more intact high end frequencies than the Blu-Ray and so I’ve synced it to the recent restoration. I’ve also included the Blu-Ray track though as they’re fairly similar. Neither track is superb, but they do fine. The old Criterion DVD is more muffled.
For subtitles, I’ve included the BFI translation in both srt and vobsub format, as well as an srt of the translation on the Gaumont Blu-Ray. Chapters are also included.
Video: - The 2011 BFI Blu-Ray colour corrected via Lumetri Color in Adobe Premiere Pro
Audio:- The 2010 Australian Madman DVD synced to the 2011 BFI Blu-Ray 1.0 FLAC
- The 2011 BFI Blu-Ray audio track 1.0 FLAC
Screenshots (2004 Criterion DVD, 2011 BFI Blu-Ray, Custom colour regrade):
The above images here are an example where the 2004 Criterion DVD would seem to have been overcorrected, in an earlier wide shot we see that this window setting is much bluer than it is shown in close-up on the DVD.
The above is an example of where the 2011 Blu-Ray restoration appears much too dark.
What's next:
I'm hoping this might be the first of many such fan restorations I undertake, particularly of French cinema which seems to have suffered so much in terms of these teal/gold transfers. Next I hope to look at Demy's The Young Girls of Rochefort, and the most recent transfers of some of Eric Rohmer's work.

A Theatrical Stereo Mix of the Extended Cut of THE BLUES BROTHERS (1980)? |

To this day, there has never been (and perhaps never will be) an official version of the Extended cut of John Landis's THE BLUES BROTHERS in its original stereo format. Having just the 5.1 / 7.1 mixes is great and all, but those edited fake sound effects can be pretty annoying and distinctly obvious to hear, coupled with the general-but-way-too-clean audio. The only way to enjoy this classic "filthy mouths & bad attitude" in all its original magnetic and vibrating glory is to watch the Theatrical version from the:
- 1998 Collector's Edition LaserDisc / VHS / DVD
- 2005 25th Anniversary DVD
There's also the German Turbine BD that happens to include both the Extended and Theatrical version's original stereo. Only in Germany, not in America.
As a small commemoration of the film's selection for preservation in the Library of Congress back in 2020, I thought it'd be really to edit & create a Theatrical-based Stereo mix of the Extended cut! Unfortunately, I'm not an expert at editing & mastering such extensive audio for movies unlike others users here and there, so I'm hoping someone surprises me with their attempts to create this Original Extended Stereo Audio Mix of The Blues Brothers (1980)!

Babes in Toyland (1986) - 1986 US TV Broadcast Version Reconstruction in HD |

Hi,
I own the 1991 Orion VHS videotape of the so-bad-it's-good Christmas TV movie, Babes in Toyland (1986), with Drew Barrymore and Keanu Reeves.
Since there's no official Blu-ray or DVD release of this TV movie as of yet, I was wondering if someone could recreate the original 1986 US broadcast version in HD with a 1.33:1 1080p web rip/delogoed HDTV rip of the TV movie and a VHS videotape recording of the original 1986 US broadcast ripped, cleaned up, delogoed, AI upscaled to 1080p, and color-corrected to match the restored footage, complete with the original Orion intro after the MGM intro and the original Orion outro before the MGM outro.
I would like to have the recreation for a future project of a custom Blu-ray set (which will be available as ISO files) of the 4 screen versions of the original 1903 operetta Babes in Toyland by Victor Herbert and Glen MacDonough - Hal Roach Studios, 1934; Disney, 1961; Orion, 1986; and MGM, 1997. The Blu-ray set will be called "Babes in Toyland Collection".
The commercial breaks from the VHS videotape recording of the original 1986 US TV broadcast would be included as a bonus feature, of course.
Thanks,
James
