[Cancelled] Streets of Fire (Project CRT #8)

Streets of Fire (Project CRT #8 v1.0)

Part of the Project CRT, for more background read here:
https://fanrestore.com/thread-3228

To quickly recap, many late 90's/early 2000s HD, DVD and even LD masters have a significant red/magenta push on modern flat panels. It is assumed that this is caused by them being mastered on older CRT monitors which had a green and blue push. This project attempts to fix many of those old masters by making them look how the color technician would see them on a CRT master monitor. Not necessarily more theatrically accurate but hopefully closer to what the colorist wanted and hopefully more pleasing to the eye.

This is the Shout copy of SoF corrected to look how it does on my Sony BVM monitor.

Early Comparison: Original/CRT

The video was further refined using pictures The Aluminum Falcon took at a 35mm presentation. Particularly lower the green slightly and raising the yellow slightly. Additionally, I fixed some compression artifacts and other junk from the Shout BD

The audio has the 2.0, 4.1 and 5.1 from the 2-disc set. I'm syncing the PCM 2.0 from the US WS LD and the P&S Japanese LD from BDgeek. I have the DD 2.0 from the US DVD on its way.

Video:
The Shout BD of SoF color corrected on a CRT mastering monitor and further refined to some 35mm shots.

Audio:
1. PCM 2.0 Dolby Surround (from the US WS LD)
2. PCM 2.0 Dolby Surround (from the JPN LD - SF047-1572)
3. PCM 2.0 Dolby Surround (from the JPN LD - SF078-0054)
4. DTS-HD MA 4.1 (from the Shout BD)
5. DTS-HD MA 2.0 (from the Shout BD)
6. DTS-HD MA 5.1 (from the Shout BD)

When AI upscaling, what should I look for?
Posted by: Serums - 2022-10-30, 05:39 AM - Forum: Audio and video editing - Replies (5)

Hello,

I've happened upon something that could be a base for a very interesting project. It is in HD but it's not the greatest of quality. I'd like to ideally use something like an AI upscaler to bring out whatever quality might be hiding inside (even though such an effort may take a while with my computer) Smile

I'm aware that upscaling software usually has a few different restoration profiles to choose from. I've never done this before, so could anyone with more experience perhaps lend some advice as to how I should look at these settings so I could choose the most appropriate one for the video I have?

Thanks!

StudioCanal "stole" my Raw Deal Trailer Restoration
Posted by: bendermac - 2022-10-29, 09:52 PM - Forum: Everything else... - Replies (27)

These little knockleheads really took my restoration for the Raw Deal trailer of my YT-Channel and put it on the new Blu-ray/4K Blu-ray release. Well, since it's watermarked they cropped it to 4:3. But I instantly recognized my work. Exact same edits and text. They even patched in a few shots where they couldn't crop out a banner. But the real funny thing is that could've just asked for the watermark-free file.

Not even studios ask these days and grab things of youtube Rolleyes Wink

  Gangs Of New York
Posted by: alleycat - 2022-10-29, 01:36 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (2)

What's people's thoughts on the blu rays of Gangs of New York?

https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a=0&...9&i=11&l=0

Clearly the newer blu ray is better from a picture quality point of view but it does lose some image on all four sides. It also looks like it's been given a teal workover, screenshot 12 for example the copper's uniform is now green instead of blue. Then again I'm not that taken with the color from the older blu ray either, looks a bit washed out to me. The DVD is the same as the earlier blu ray, I suspect they are from the same source.

What do others think?

I'm wondering if there is a project here somewhere, maybe the two blu rays AutoOverlay'd with color correction and possibly the Cinema DTS.

Exclamation do NOT upgrade to Win10 22H2!
Posted by: Bilbofett - 2022-10-25, 09:24 PM - Forum: Everything else... - Replies (5)

General warning again: Windows update to version 22H2 has jacked up my Adobe Premiere, general codecs interaction, especially Lagarith (older codec) encoding and decoding..its not even displaying the full 8.3 filename w. extension in Premiere; its calling it ".av" instead of ".avi!" I don't think I can roll it back either.
There's also reports of very sluggish performance handling large files in Windows, waveform drawing visibility vanishing for AAC audio after upgrading (in both video and audio editors), and Nvidia had a bug (also w/ Win11) of super slow frame-rates in games until they patched the driver. Beware!

Adventures in Wonderland (1992-1994) preservation from Disney+?
Posted by: James76 - 2022-10-25, 08:59 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (1)

Hi,

I own the VHS videotape releases of some episodes of Adventures in Wonderland. The complete series is currently on Disney+, which I'm not subscribed to. Has anyone preserved the series from Disney+ with DVDFab's StreamFab or some program like that? Please let me know ASAP.

I would like the series preserved and sent to me so I can make a custom 50GB BD-R ISO set.

Thanks!

The Librarian Quest For The Spear Extended Cut HD Project with bad sources (Finished)
Posted by: Doctor M - 2022-10-20, 12:50 AM - Forum: Converting, encoding, authoring - Replies (6)

So, I was planning my first HD preservation.  After much trial and error I picked some editing software that works well for me.

The movie: The Librarian: Quest for the Spear.  Briefly: The U.S. DVD has an extended cut running 12 minutes longer, there is no U.S. blu-ray and the international discs are the original TV runtime.

I snagged the extended cut from TubiTV.  It's low bitrate @ 2.4GB.  I was going to edit it with a Blu-ray source, inserting the missing pieces and swapping at least one wrong shot compared to the U.S. DVD.  I also planned to sync it to the DVD audio since Tubi does stereo AAC and the BD is only 640kbps 5.1, hardly worth editing the audio tracks and re-encoding.

That's when something interesting happened.  I started playing around with AnyStream.  The free version can do Amazon Prime (which I don't have), but it can, as a result, rip freevee... which has the extended cut of the movie weighing in at 10.3GB with 640kbps 5.1 DD+.  Hardly worth editing at all now.

Except: The freevee 5.1 audio has (at the very least) the center and right audio channels swapped.  I haven't aggressively tested the rear or LFE channels to see in they're in the right place.

My first thought was just to, again, sync the DVD audio.  Except freevee's version is 24fps, not 23.976 like my other three sources.  So I guess not only do I have to resync the track, I need to adjust the frame rate... which means the same needs to be done for the subtitles, and yeah, now I'm hating this.

The stereo track on freevee seems okay, but that doesn't help.  I don't know if a lower bitrate 5.1 track would be in better shape or not.

I guess I could swap the audio channels, but AFAIK, there is no way to do that without decoding to 6 WAV files, re-arranging and re-encoding... to 5.1 PCM? FLAC?

Anyone have any good suggestions, because I hate all the answers.
