Is converting HDR10+ to DV accurate and what's the easiest way?
Posted by: Kreeep - 2022-08-09, 05:31 AM - Forum: General technical discussions - Replies (12)

When it comes to extracting, converting and injecting HDR10+ or Dolby Vision metadata into a static HDR10 video, I wouldn't have a clue. Is there a GUI-friendly method of doing it these days? If so, is it even a good idea? Would the results remain accurate?

The new 4K release of Heat has quite dark day-time scenes. I haven't looked into it yet, but there is a 2160p WEB-DL from Amazon available with HDR10+. Was wondering whether it might improve things if that metadata could be pinched and injected into the 4K disc.

  Bram Stoker's Dracula HDTV

Does anyone happen to have the HDTV cap of Bram Stoker's Dracula? The one that was the master for the Superbit DVD. Many thanks in advance

Looking for Video Editing Software Suggestions
Posted by: Doctor M - 2022-08-08, 01:30 AM - Forum: Audio and video editing - Replies (6)

I'm thinking about starting an HD project. Up until now I've pretty much worked with Womble MPEG Video Wizard or complicated avisynth scripts.

I was thinking about Premier, but my PC is pretty out of date so I'd need an old version. I saw someone recommending VSDC Free Video Editor as a preference for older PCs.

Anyone familiar with it and have an opinion? I'm open to other suggestions. My PC is a cobbled together thing still running Win7.

Lifeforce (1985) - Theatrical Trailer - Fan Remaster HD Scope
Posted by: bendermac - 2022-08-06, 04:36 PM - Forum: Released - No Replies

The movie was released numerous times on Blu-ray and also on 4K Blu-ray. But the full trailer never got a proper treatment. Up to this day the trailer is only available in SD Letterboxed. The best version of it can be found on the DVD. The version used on the Blu-ray releases is unwatchable.

So I ventured out and try to restore it and it worked without flaws. A 100% re-creation of the full trailer Big Grin

As usual the titles and credit cards have been re-created from scratched and matched the original. The opening Cannon logo wasn't included in any of the HD/4K releases. I borrowed it from the 1986 movie "Invaders from Mars" as it's also in scope.

Enjoy Smile

  Pink Flamingos - VHS Tracks

Here's a few tracks I put together for John Water's Pink Flamingos. The theatrical cut has only ever been released on VHS and the new Criterion BD. The BD is better, but it's missing a few songs due to copyright issues.

All tracks synced to the Criterion BD

1. The Harmony Vision VHS audio
2. The BD audio with the replaced music patched in from the VHS

Last Of The Mohicans — Existing Masters?
Posted by: LucasGodzilla - 2022-07-28, 03:59 AM - Forum: Official and unofficial releases - Replies (29)

So last night I was thinking about a theoretical project idea involving Michael Mann's Last Of The Mohicans and I was trying to tally up in my head exactly how many different documented cuts are there to the movie out there?

As far as I'm aware of, people generally seem to agree with the main consensus of there being at least three primary cuts: Theatrical (French / ViaVision BD), Expanded (1999 DVD) & Definitive (Any current BD).

However, I randomly stumbled across a YouTube channel by an Eduardo Martín that managed to somehow document the existence of an International cut as well as the possibility of another home media cut exclusive to LD (though from what I've seen of the videos regarding this specifically, the changes seemed to be a result of either a wonky LD capture or differing hard-subs).

I did want to post all the videos he made though because I wanted to inquire if anyone has any further details regarding this situation, or if anyone here has these SD rips—or are in possession of these releases that could be possibly ripped.

I also wanted to take this opportunity to inquire about the audio situation. Given the only project that seems to exist is Jerryshadoe's reconstruction of the Theatrical cut before it got released in HD officially—which used audio sourced from DVDs and up, as far as I'm aware of, there aren't any LD audio captures or the likes?

I don't suppose anyone has any idea if the THX LD (presuming it is the Theatrical cut and not its own thing) is stemming from the 70mm Dolby 6-Track mix—given that's usually the case with the lossy AC3 track included on THX LDs?

For the release of “The Last of the Mohicans,” Fox employed the services of Lucasfilm’s Theatre Alignment Program (TAP) to evaluate and approve the cinemas selected to book a 70mm print.

The 70mm prints of “The Last of the Mohicans” featured full-frame imagery blown up from anamorphic 35mm and Six-Track Dolby Stereo (SR-encoded Baby Boom format).

I seem to recall reading before that the LD mix did differ from the ones included on releases since then—described as it being bassier and more powerful than the newer 5.1 remixes—but I haven't got a clue if this is another one of several cases where it's just the AC3 encoding itself than the mix itself.

Scarface (1983) - Theatrical Trailer Fan Remaster HD Scope
Posted by: bendermac - 2022-07-26, 10:56 PM - Forum: Released - No Replies

19 years ago I've made the fan-remaster of this trailer for movie-list.com. You can find it on YouTube. Though the person who uploaded never gave me any credit. Shame, as it reached over 1 million views.
Anyway... The project wasn't perfect. I wasn't happy with the titles, it was only in SD and the newer Blu-rays look so much better. So I finally got back to the editing bay and restored the trailer to it's closed to the original it will ever look. Btw, the 1st version from back in the day had the Universal logo attached by me. The logo was never part of the trailer. Back then I've thought it was a nice touch to include it. Here I've left it out, to honor the original intend.

Edit notes:

  • Scene at 1:01 replaced with a similar, as it's not in the final cut of the movie
  • Scene at 2:16 replaced with a similar, as it's not in the final cut of the movie
  • Titles and MPAA cards have been created from scratch and matched the originals

Hey,
I've been lurking here for a while, as I take great interest in audio quality. As is the case with probably many, Moshrom's blog (blah-ray) opened my eyes to the problem. I'm looking forward to my time here Smile
