  Interesting comments from Robert Harris
Posted by: zoidberg - 2020-10-18, 06:54 PM - Forum: General technical discussions - Replies (1)

Just thought I'd post this thread from film-tech forum where Robert Harris popped up, it was originally about 4K Lawrence of Arabia but Harris says some interesting stuff regarding restorations, generational loss, pixels/grain etc. He appears on page 2

Weird analogue / digital audio alignment on an LD
Posted by: pipefan413 - 2020-10-18, 01:03 PM - Forum: Capture and rip - Replies (12)

Currently having a bit of a fight with one particular LD and I'm not sure what's causing it, but maybe somebody who understands more about the LD format itself may be in a better position to follow what's happening.

My usual method for syncing the digital audio to the video is as follows:

1. Extract the in-sync 48 kHz analogue audio from raw LD video/audio capture (which I'll have made some effort to ensure actually is in sync, with AviSynth and VirtualDub2)
2. Resample that to 44.1 kHz and dither to 16-bit in RX to use as sync target for digital audio
3. Delete samples from start of digital capture to precisely sync with analogue audio, therefore exactly sync with video as well:

4. Verify no other changes to digital audio contents by checking in hex editor that it matches exactly apart from the missing zero bytes from start

Then of course I'd go on with the resync of the digital audio.

However, I've just hit a wall because I've found an LD this does not work on. It's NTSC like all the others I've captured thus far so it isn't a PAL thing. I'm using the exact same hardware for capture as well. But basically, I can align a point near the start fine, but by later on they've desynchronised again. With every other LD I've captured, sync remains rock solid to the sample from start to finish using this method, but with this disc, the analogue track drifts and gradually falls earlier than the digital one over time. It's admittedly a very small discrepancy at least, but it's consistent across sides 1 and 2 (which is the whole thing). By the end of side 2 for example, it's something like 86 samples out of sync (analogue ahead and/or digital behind).

What might be going on here?

One thing I'm wondering: if an LD has digital audio, is that just converted through an ADC and chucked out both the TOSLINK (as digital) and RCAs (as analogue), or is there a completely separate "legacy" analogue audio track also stored on the disc which is just played directly out of the RCA output? If so, I guess it could be that this disc has a slight discrepancy between the analogue and digital tracks, and it's just the first time I've found that on a disc. If the digital track is converted in real time and thrown out the analogue output though, something's going wrong somewhere in the chain and I have no idea why it's suddenly different. I guess my next move should be capturing another disc (ideally one I already captured, but that feels like potential time wasted) to see if the problem resurfaces without changing anything else. I already captured this one repeatedly with identical results on both side 1 and side 2.

Grand Prix (1966) - Remastered Trailer
Posted by: bendermac - 2020-10-18, 12:23 PM - Forum: Released - No Replies

Here is another ooooooold project that I just recently finished. I've started the restoring of the trailer in 2011, but I never finished the end title sequence. Well, I did it a few weeks ago and now it's finally released.

Except for one scene, this trailer is accurate to the original one. One scene needed to be replaced due a lot of text in it.

Enjoy

Back to the Future (1985) - Full trailer
Posted by: bendermac - 2020-10-16, 09:00 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (6)

The 4K set is now here and I had hopes Universal would finally include the full trailer for BTTF. But once again we got nothing in that regard.
On Youtube there is one version of it available, but the quality, especially audio, is pretty bad. So maybe someone here has a better version. Maybe on VHS that can captured, which could be used to restore the trailer to it's full glory*

Please let me know

Trailer on YouTube

And yes, I know of the re-edits of the trailer on YT. The source is from a re-edit, but with even worse audio quality and trailer credits aren't recreated at all. The above video shows the real deal.

*Overall the trailer is kinda meh. But considering the importance of the movie it's defiantly something we shouldn't ignore.

Just wanted to say hi.   Smile

I'm a big movie fan, but sadly have no particular skills to contribute to the valiant efforts here (as far as I know).  Clearly there is an amazing wealth of knowledge here.  I am interested in learning more about how you all do things, and hopefully get exposed to quality copies of some favorites that have never gotten a high-quality video release.

Hi everyone!

I've seen here a lot of praise for this software regarding HDR tonemapping. I've installed it and so on and so on, but when I clicked on "Start", it shows this error message over again:

Braddock: Missing in Action III (1988) - Remastered Trailer
Posted by: bendermac - 2020-10-14, 09:49 PM - Forum: Released - Replies (1)

Today I've finished the restoring for MIA3 Big Grin

It's not a particular great movie or trailer. I made it more due to some incapable work from NSM Records from Germany. They added the trailer on their Blu-ray (currently the only BD in the world) and they did a re-edit on their own. Boy did they fail. Scenes that are in the movie aren't used in the trailer, because it's was hard to find the right shots and they did simply not care for frame accurate editing in a lot of shots. The titles weren't re-created either. It's a mess.

So I took the challenge and did it myself. The final result is much much closer to the original trailer, due some scenes not being in the final movie or are a few frames shorter. But overall you wouldn't notice for these shots. I also didn't "fix" the flipped shots from the original trailer. NSM did this and for me personally this isn't correct, since the trailer itself had these errors. Lets just say my version is 99% the original trailer Wink

Anyway... you can view it on my Youtube Channel

And for comparison, check out NSM Records version. Though it's only with German audio. But the trailer itself is the same as the US one

The original english trailer is currently only available on the Region 1 DVD and maybe on VHS

  anaglyph 3D to left/right or top/bottom
Posted by: spoRv - 2020-10-14, 08:46 PM - Forum: Script snippets - Replies (1)

I was curious to know if there was a way to convert anaglyph 3D to left/right or top/bottom - after that, converting to MVC should be easy, I guess... Wink

Found an avisynth script here:
https://vrtifacts.com/dump-those-silly-c...d-glassess

If someone have already used - or will use it in the future - I'd like to watch some samples!

P.S. the script deals only with red/cyan and green/magenta anaglyphs, so it would be nice to add amber/blue version!
