I'd love to see the theatrical verison of this movie preserved. It's on DVD but not blu ray to my knowlege. I'm not sure if there is a HDTV broadcast that could be used to fill in the alternate footage that only exists in the theatrical version.

Ghost in the Shell - Ultimate Edition
![[Image: ghost_in_the_shell.jpg]](https://www.showfilmfirst.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/ghost_in_the_shell.jpg)
While im not the worlds biggest anime fan but when one does come along that perks my interest, I normally saviour the experience.
This is all because of the film Ghost In the Shell.
Back in the 90's there was a slew of anime fever that rocked the U.K, there were Classics (Akira), there we're a few I really got a kick out of (Fist of the North Star), then some that I did not get on with (Urotsukidōji). It ran side by side with my Hong Kong action film period, with me being exposed to some truly owe inspiring and amazing works.
It was with the 1995 DVD release when I first saw Ghost In the Shell, and it knocked my socks off. It stands today as one of my favorate films of all time, and I regularly point people in its direction.
Over the years Ghost in the shell has had alot of releases and re-releases, with the 2007 Japanese Bluray being the last one that had me waving my cash at it, but alas I missed my opitunity.
Ive gone by over the years with a HDTV Rip in WMV format with a Japanese 5.1 mix and some decent subtitle's in the hopes of that definitive release on the horizon.
Late last year I got a copy of the U.K 25th aniversary Blu Ray. Great Picture (but windowboxed!), Uncompressed original language track in 2.0. Sadly it ends there. Really bad english DUB with missing SFX! and misspelled subtitles. While not as bad as Dub titles it is pretty bad to release in this mess.
Many fans in the westen hemesphere have uttered the works 'The Curse of Ghost In The Shell' at the shoddy release and re-releases, as soon as one thing is fixed another is added. Upscales, Mixed audio and Bad subtitles have all been the bane of Ghost in the Shell fans.
Then there's the 2.0 release....... I shall speak no more of this.
I have The Killer, Hard Boiled, The Dark Knight trilogy in the works, and a list of projects that could last me years. This was the next one on my list now the U.K disc has failed me.
So this list is the best elements available over the releases, Underlined if I have it. I need help filling it up with the best. Then maybe we could put together an Ultimate Edition.
Will update list with the best elements over the course of the project.
VIDEO:
HDTV 1080p, Highly compressed, artifacts
US/U.K 25th anniversary. Good, softer than the HDTV, Same as the Japanese release but a more recent encode
AUDIO:
Japanese U.S/U.K 25th anniversary uncompressed 24bit 2.0 Theatrical Mix.
Japanese DTS 6.1 from R1 DVD
English DTS EX 6.1 from R1 DVD
English 2.0 from the Japanese BD release.
SUBTITLES:
HDTV source unknown, probably the R1 DVD?
EXTRAS:
"Production Report" featurette - R1 DVD
"Digital Works" featurette - R1 DVD
Theatrical Trailers Various Releases.
So over all the releases in the world what are the best / missing elements?
Does anybody have the R1 DVD Release?
NOTE: A small batch of the R1 DVDs was released with a fault on the DTS tracks resulting in no LFE (subwoofer) output (the 5.1 and 2.0 tracks are fine).
This is true as it is the release I got my hands on! I will take the LFE channel from the Dolby Digital Tracks.

_,,,^..^,,,_ presents: SUPERNOVA (2000) [spoRv]
| PROJECTS: Released | In progress | Future | Mission & Setup |
Mission: to release Supernova in High Definition Blu-ray format.
Video sources: 2x HDTV
Audio sources: DVD
Subtitles sources: DVD
Project info:
Even if "Supernova" could not be considered a masterpiece, I like it, as many of us... no Blu-ray is ever released, so it's time to make a proper high-definition version.
There are two HDTV broadcasts around, one scandinavian and the other russian; both are 1920x1080 2.35:1 25fps; they have different color grading but, apart that and according to preliminary tests, they match 100%; if it proves true, I'll overlay them to average compression artifacts and obtain a better quality without using nasty noise reduction; result color is also better than both single version; video then will be slowed down to 23.976fps.
All five languages are taken from the PAL DVD; they are all Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks; they are converted from 25fps to 23.976fps; if I'll be able to find out the English Cinema DTS track, it will be included as main track.
Subtitles for all five languages are from PAL DVD.
Source Material
Video: - Supernova - Scandinavian HDTV
- Supernova - Russian HDTV
Audio:
Subtitles:
Final format: BD-25
Video:
1920x1080, 23.976fps, A.R. 2.35:1, AVC encoded
Audio:
DD 16bit 448kbps 5.1 from PAL DVD: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish
DD 16bit 192kbps 2.0 from HDTV
Subtitles:
from PAL DVD: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish

Project Status: ARCHIVED due to retail BD edition

High-end video capture cards |

...once upon a time, I was happy with my video capture card... it is based on the Philips SAA-713x chipset, has a 9-bit ADC, 4-line adaptive comb filter, could capture uncompressed... and it's better than ones based on BT8X8 chipset!
Then, also thanks to this forum, I discovered that there are much better video capture cards around...
The requirements:
- MUST capture uncompressed YUV 4:2:2 (and, if possible, HuffYUV too)
- MUST have a REALLY good comb filter ALSO for PAL signal
- MUST capture PAL and NTSC
- 10-bit ADC and over preferred
- PCI highly preferred; then PCI-E, USB 2.0, FireWire
- Composite and S-Video input - RGB and/or Y/Pb/Pr are welcome
- TBC will be appreciated, but absolutely not mandatory
- VirtualDub capture really appreciated, but not mandatory
- No TV tuner whenever is possible
During my usual internet searches, I found some interesting products - in no particular order:
Aja Kona LHe Plus
overly exagerated for laserdisc captures, price out of many pockets... has a 12-bit ADC, but only a 3-line comb filter; could capture audio too, but analog is XLR balanced...
Viewcast Osprey 530
Seems very good, but have not find deep info about it. The 4-channel capture cards of the same brand have 3-D + 2-D comb filter, so it's highly probable that this one has it too.
Black Magic Intensity Pro
10-bit ADC, 24-bit analog audio input, price not too high... maybe the right compromise; but it seems that SD capture is there as a "bonus feature"!
Pixel Magic PDI Deluxe a.k.a. SweetSpot
IIRC used by the X0project, and works well with DScaler too! But was not able to spot anywhere used...
ATI Theater HD 750 -> Asus My Cinema ES2-750 -> Diamond TVW750PCIE
12-bit ADC, 2-D 5-line and 3-D comb filter (will the latter work with PAL too?!?), and NO hardware MPEG2 encoder like the 650... Someone thinks that its AGC has problems.
At the end, I was lucky to find an used SweetSpot, in perfect shape and almost for free...

High-end audio capture cards |

Many think that their default audio card is good enough… but, are you sure about it?
I was sure too, that my own sound card, a SigmaTel with the CXD9872RD was pretty good… the true is, that my ears and my TV speakers are not good enough to spot the difference between what could be considered a mediocre sound card (like mine) and what IS an excellent card.
It’s time to upgrade it… so, the feautures that I’m looking for an excellent sound card, to use as analog audio capture device along with its video counterpart are: - variable bitrate (16/24bit)
- variable sample frequency (44,1KHz and 48KHz mandatory)
- high quality connection, gold-plated
- RCA analog input/output are very welcome
- S/PDIF digital input or output are highly appreciated
- NO external interface box – at least only connection cables
After some days of hard web search, I found A LOT of high end cards… I picked up few of them, that could be interesting:
M-Audio Audiophile 2496
16/24bit, 96KHz, gold plated RCA in/out, digital in/out, ADC S/N >100dB
Asus Xonar Essence ST
16/24bit, 44.1 to 192KHz, digital in/out, ADC S/N >118dB, lacks RCA in
ESI Audio Juli@
16/24bit, 44.1 to 192KHz, gold plated RCA in/out, digital in/out, ADC S/N >114dB
Lynx Studio Technology L22
8/16/24/32bit, 8 to 200KHz, ADC S/N >117dB, XLR&BNC in/out, optional digital boards
The Lynx L22 could be defined the Rolls Royce of sound card; excellent high quality, lot of features, but really high price.
M-Audio is very good, but quite old; the price is reasonable.
Asus seems to be the newest card, with excellent S/N ratio, but unfortunately lacks RCA in/out.
At the end, ESI Juli@ could be definided the best sound card, considering the balance between audio quality, features and price.
But it’s difficult to tell how much an high end sound card could be better than my old, default, simple sound card – that, by the way, is capable of capture digital sound bit-to-bit perfect, and that’s a very good thing!
Then, I discovered a free tool that could tell me the quality of any sound card, using test signal sent and received. I used the earphone out, connected to the microphone in, to test my sound card – better connections could be used, of course, with better result, but I wanted to test the worst case scenario.
The tool is RightMark Audio Analyzer (or RMAA); I tested my sound card with RMAA 5.5, but there is also a newer version; I strongly encourage all of you interested in audio capture for their restoration projects (but not only) to download it, install it, take some minutes to learn how to use it, get results and finally make a comparison between your actual card and some of the best ones.

I've just got here and I'm already moving the furniture around ;-)
How about an audio-specific section? Lots of us are into resyncing soundtracks (usually laser-sourced, but not always) so it would be good to keep track of the various audio-only projects in their own threads. It may even help me remember what I'm working on myself...
