In theory, every lossless codec should be the same - same output as the input, bit-for-bit perfect... this is true, but there are some reasons to use one over another...

HuffYUV - one of the oldest, good compression, and still works well also with old PCs, even in real time, but as it works only in RGB and YUV, I reccomend to use it to capture analog SD video.

Lagarith - newer, very good compression, quite fast, works with RGB, YUV, YV12; I used it everytime, until yesterday... I tried to encode with x264 a file encoded with Lagarith, and it gave up, too much errors... thought maybe I encoded with too many opened software, re-encoded it... same problems... I tried four times, always the same...

MagicYUV - newest, good compression, final size bigger than Lagarith, but faster, and when I play the encoded file, it's possible to jump to every point without waiting, plus VirtualDub plays it in real time without stuttering... I should test it further, but I think this will be the only lossless coded I'll use in the future!

What's your experience with these, and other, lossless codecs?

I hope this is in the right place. Anyhoo......what would I need to make really sweet disc art. I don't mean labels, I'm talking about top notch hi-rez, printed right on the disc kind of thing.

When I run out of HDD space, usually I don't do the so-called "digital intermediate" (read: lossless version of the project that will be converted in a lossy version); this let you save A LOT of space, but if something will go wrong (read: you discover some wrong frames, blackouts etc.) it will take A LOT more time to do a unprocessed->processing->encoding task, instead of lossless-processed->encoding...


Plus, if you have many processing filters, it's a wise choice to do several temporary intermediates, because it could save a lot of time...

Example (purely hypotetical, but reflects actual experience):

source->color regrade+denoise+upscale->encoding to final lossy version = 13 hours

source->color regrade->lossless intermediate 1 = 1 hour
lossless intermediate 1->denoise->lossless intermediate 2 = 2 hours
lossless intermediate 2->upscale->lossless intermediate 3 = 3 hours
lossless intermediate 3->encoding to final lossy version = 2 hours

a LOT of HDD space, that will be regained once the project is ready, but also a lot of spared time, in particular when you use a "vintage" PC like I do... of course, in newer PCs if you spare few minutes it doesn't worth the hassle...

Project info:
Waterworld is available on Blu-ray; despite the fact it has an higher bitrate of the HD-DVD, the latter is considered by many of higher quality, without DNR; but its color grading is a bit too magenta, so it's color corrected to display better blue gradients.
I also thought to add the Cinema DTS track, plus the analog english track from the laserdisc; foreign languages are from the HD-DVD Dolby Digital Plus track; they lack the .1 subwoofer track, so it's taken from the Cinema DTS, and is re-encoded to DD 640kbps.

It's quite rare to see female users on forums like that, so I'm pretty curious to know something about you, girls!

Dear users, sometimes someone would like to do a certain restoration, and needs to translate/transcript dialogs or subtitles, but have no idea where to find a translator...

So, don't be shy, post here if you can read/speak another language, apart English; this does not mean that you must do every thing a project maker have in mind, but if you think it's interesting, you can give your help!

I start for myself: I'm Italian, so no problem to translate to and from English; I can read and write English quite well, but sometimes I have troubles to understand some spoken "nuances", in particular fastest speeches and accents... I can understand some words of French and Spanish - and few German ones, too - but that's it...

This is a new spanish series about time travel.

I usually run away from spanish series because they are SO cheap and try to get the widest audience target they can (they include teen characters along with "grow-ups", "grandpas", children and whatever they can think of just to get the most part of the audience "related" to any of the characters and get them to watch the commercials).

Normally they also look "fake", shot in sets that you see that are sets, too colorful, too "home video". You get the idea. And the stories... they normally tend to be comedies since they seem to be unable to take themselves seriously.

That's why when I heard they were shooting a time travel series ("the spanish Doctor Who" they said at one point), I supposed it whould be shit. I was wrong.

First of all, it's no "Doctor Who" at all. As much as I love the british show, I didn't want an "spanish DW", mainly because when they do "the spanish whatever" it means "the cheaper lamer whatever". So better not walking that path. For the record, there is a "spanish walking dead" in development, called Rabia (Rage). LOL

Anyway, The Ministry Of Time.

Basically, the spanish government has a secret ministry that works on mantaining history as it is. If it was real life they would use that power to steal even more from us, but since it's fiction, they take care of history.

There's a large tunnel under the ministry that has lots of doors, everyone leading to a certain time and place. So no time machines.

An interesting fact is that time passes at the same time at both sides of the door. I mean, a door that in 2013 leaded to 1806, now would lead to 1808, so the missions are kind of one shots, no going back again to solve mistakes. I think that gives more sense of adventure. They talk about a "broken" door which leads to a fixed point in time, I guess it will have relevance later.

Since the first chapter, they say you can't travel to the future. All doors lead to past times, "as far as they know". The fact that there are also other doors outside of the ministry makes me think they could at some point travel to the future if the series gets a second season, but by now they are going to limit themselves to past times.

The series doesn't look cheap and they are taking it seriously. The audience ratings aren't high by now, though. Since it is a production of the national television I hope they make at least a second season since they don't really need to have great audiences as the private networks.

In this week's episode (the 3rd one, 8 have been shot for this season), Himmler (Hitler's right hand man) tries to get to a time door during a real visit he paid to Spain. In real life he was supposedly searching for the Holy Grail, which he believed it was hidden in the monastery of Montserrat, near Barcelona. He believed the mythic Montsalvat or Castle Of The Grail that Wagner mentioned in his opera Parsifal was really Montserrat. In the series he searches for the door, of course. Promising!

By they way, Himmler got his wallet stolen during his visit to Barcelona (really!). He got the full spanish experience. LOL

Ok, so we are making this Cube 2 BD no one seems to be interested on. XD

So you might think... Why is this guy constantly opening posts about that movie?

I will explain.

We started the project, but now we need some material to make the best edition possible. While in the audio section there is a subforum to request audio tracks, here we just have this subforum to request PROJECTS, but not to request source materials.

That's why I have 2 posts about the same movie in this subforum. One was to start the project and this one is to request material to get it done.

So mainly we would need any NTSC edition with all the special features, since we already have the PAL edition and we (I mean spoRv really) could improve the quality of those extras via his PaNup process.

Come on! At least someone in this forum must know somebody who has the DVD!
