The Taking of Pelham 123 (1974), Original Mono
Posted by: axeyou - 2023-05-17, 01:39 AM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (26)

According to the B-R.com forum, Kino's The Taking of Pelham 123 UHD sports a 5.1 remix and a 2.0 mono downmix of that 5.1: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php...st20747347

The 2011 MGM BD has a 2.0 (original?) mono, while the 2016 Kino BD has a 2.0 that sounds different: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.php?p...tcount=119

Has anyone compared the various BD/DVD/LD/VHS releases to see which original mono sounds the best? I vaguely remember seeing a post around here before but can't find it through site search now.

Thanks in advance!

The Lady Eve (1941) Amazon WEB-DL Synced to Criterion BD
Posted by: axeyou - 2023-05-16, 02:00 AM - Forum: Released - Replies (7)

Hi all,

I synced an AMZN WEB-DL of The Lady Eve (1941) to Criterion's BD.

Here's Blah-ray's coverage: https://blah-ray.blogspot.com/2020/12/la...-1941.html

Looking at the waveforms, I'm pretty convinced that the WEB-DL I found matches the one on Blah-ray:

Notes on the sync:

- The video streams differ in two places:
    1) Opening intros
    2) The WEB-DL has 2 additional frames that's missing from the Criterion BD. This is on a scene cut boundary. (WEB-DL frame #69703, #69704)

- Even after adjusting for both, the two audio tracks still wiggle in and out of sync within 20ms or so throughout the film. So I mostly synced by video, instead of trying to align the audios perfectly.
- I applied an additional delay so that the desync b/w the two audios is mostly within +/- 10ms. Spot-checking a few scenes, I didn't notice any A/V sync issues.
- This is my first amateurish sync involving more than a simple delay. Any feedback and suggestions are most welcome!

Input: E-AC3, 2.0, 224 kbps, 48 kHz, (mediainfo doesn't report a bit depth here)
Output: PCM, 2.0, 2304 kbps, 48 kHz, 24 bits (maybe 16 bits would've been enough?)

PM me for a link.
I also kept the original E-AC3 track, in case anyone is interested in aligning it more accurately to the Criterion track themselves.

Cheers!

  Laserdisc Collection for Sale
Posted by: wongfeihung - 2023-05-14, 04:57 PM - Forum: Movies, TV shows and other - Replies (20)

I recently inherited a load of (mainly) golden age LD titles from my dad and wondered if anyone here would be interested in them?

I don't have an LD player myself, so they're of no use to me.

I'd have to make a list of the titles, of course, but maybe some could be useful for projects where superior audio is required.

Due to shipping costs I'd only be looking to sell within the UK and I'd prefer to sell in bulk via a courier.

Anyone who's seriously interested please PM me for further details.

Thanks.

Remove text from video - Any new solutions?
Posted by: bendermac - 2023-05-14, 12:59 AM - Forum: General technical discussions - Replies (1)

Does anyone know of a solution that actually works on video and looks good as well?

I've a project for a new trailer restoration in mind, but one scene has text overlay. This would make using the scene not possible, unless text removal has been gotten better, especially text on faces.

I hope someone can help here.

Thanks

Hello, long-time lurker and just wanted to say Hi. Recently, I have been in awe of how much better Laserdisc soundtracks are to even the most recent UHD remasters, so have been collecting/exploring those.

Burial Ground - (Le Notti del terrore) 35mm preservation
Posted by: Nicky90 - 2023-05-12, 04:13 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - No Replies

hello everyone
The British blue ray of Burial Ground - (The Nights of Terror) contains in the extras the 35mm scan of the film.

I had thought that it could be kept, and possibly the film synchronized with other languages.
I have the Italian audio from the blue ray, possibly I could find the one from the dvd and vhs as well.

I know that there is also German laserdisc:
https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/41208/CMV...-of-Terror

what do you think about synchronizing more audio to this version of the film?

  Merge Video into mkv
Posted by: MrBrown - 2023-05-11, 11:21 AM - Forum: Converting, encoding, authoring - Replies (3)

Hi,

Maybe someone has a solution/idea:
I have 30 Video ".bik" files, I would love to merge into one mkv stream without any unneeded reencode, to have one movie to watch without gaps.
The Videos use a strange codec (BlKi or BIKi according to vlc Player) in 1080/24. Maybe a reencode into avc might not be a bad idea.
Audio are two "BAU1" encoded streams in all of the Singular Videos.

Anyone has an idea? Thanks.

Hi, I'm Genemon123 and I've been exploring and learning about film and formats. I have a collection of many of these versions and the learning process has been amazing. I saw that this forum has more of that so I went ahead and registered. I hope to have a good time here  Smile

  Heimkehr (1941) [canceled]
Posted by: stwd4nder2 - 2023-05-10, 07:38 PM - Forum: In progress - Replies (4)

Heimkehr is a German film originally released in 1941. After the war it was labeled as propaganda and banned across Europe. The film elements (along with other "banned films") currently reside in the German Federal Archives Vault. There's never been any wide release outside it's initial theatrical run and needless to say no home media release. If you wanted to watch it today this is what you're stuck with:

This is a very blown out old tape transfer from who knows when. You can easily find it on archive.org and if you search for a version of this film this is what you'll find. It looks and sounds terrible, and is also very poorly stabilized. Nothing from this transfer was used.

Searching further I was able to dig up this:
A significant improvement. Not perfect, it's still sourced from a tape, and the timer is baked into the transfer. The only version I was able to find has that watermark throughout. The video is still watchable and the audio isn't terrible, this is what most of my restoration is sourced from.

There's also this:
There is an HD master that exists (translated to English no less), however it is only brought out for very limited educational showings. The documentary "Forbidden Films" contains about 5 minutes worth of scenes from the HD master.

This is what I plan on doing:
  • Upscaling the tape transfer to get the best quality I can out of it
  • Integrating as much video and audio from the HD version I can dig up if anyone knows of any sources out there please let me know
  • Rendering it out at 24 FPS
  • Translating the entire film into English (primarily using AI tools as I don't speak German) if anyone speaks German and wants to help edit/translate subs I could use the help
