Ransom Extended Version |

When Ransom was released on Laserdisc it contained an additional 18 minutes of footage. That version has never been released on any other format. Whilst the DVD release contained some deleted scenes, they only ran for 4 minutes and were cropped 4:3.
For this project a friend captured the US Laserdisc on a Domesday setup and sent me the video. I then went several stages of processing in Avisynth including deinterlacing, decimating, cropping, cleaning, dehaloing, chroma noise removal and upscaling. That footage was then processed in Phoenix to remove instances of dust/dirt. There was then some light processing in Topaz and finally regraining in After Effects.
@zoidberg also captured the US Laserdisc for me and in some instances I used that footage instead. There was one short in particular that looked really bad on the Domesday version, so having two different captures allowed me to mix and match. Also, both versions had different colors so I was able to merge these for certain scenes.
This additional footage was then inserted into the Blu Ray footage to recreate the Extended release. Expectations need to be set here; LD footage is never going to seamless integrate with Blu Ray footage. I have tried my very best to make the footage look as good as possible, but I feel that overprocessing low quality footage is often worse.
The Blu Ray footage was adjusted slightly so that it better matched the LD footage. Fortunately most of the additional footage is completely independent, so it is less jarring on the eyes when it occurs. Overall I was very pleased with how it came out, I’ve been working on this for the last few months and I’m specifically looking for errors when I watch it, so hopefully others will be able to enjoy it for what it is.
In terms of audio, @zoidberg was able to capture both the PCM and the AC3 tracks from the Laserdisc. And my friend with the Domesday setup managed to capture the DTS track from the Japanese Laserdisc – so we have a complete audio offering.
The English subtitles were also a challenge as the additional footage has obviously never been subtitled before. So the blu ray subtitles were cut up and the extra footage transcribed line by line – that part was pretty time consuming.
Finally in terms of extras there is everything from the DVD, including one deleted scene that isn’t actually in the Extended Version, and some interviews from YouTube.
Once again, massive thanks to @zoidberg and my Domesday friend, without them this project would have never happened.

Hello FanRes,
I did this project for a friend, but I figured I'd share it anyways. And I'm probably not the only one on this website to have done this project. But...what the heck. Compare mine with others and tell me what you think!
Specs
File- MKV, 16.82 GB
- H.264 codec
- True 24fps frame rate and speed, NOT the HD frame rate of 23.976fps.
Audio- 5.1 Dolby TrueHD
- Combination of the 5.1 DTS-HD MA track from the blu-ray version and a 2.0 Dolby Digital track from the TV version. I made sure that transitions were as smooth and seamless as possible.
About the Project
Prior to its theatrical release in 1986, the original cut of Cobra was over two hours. However, the producers were worried that Top Gun (which was released before Cobra) would still overshadow the film. So they demanded that it be cut down as much as possible so that it could get more screen times in the day.
Stallone himself was heavily involved in the editing process. From what I've read, most scenes involving other characters were cut, except the scenes of himself
If you're reading this thread, you're probably aware of the existence of a TV version which has about 6 additional minutes of footage. I combined the blu-ray version with the extended TV version.
The TV version censored many parts, both in audio and video. So if the TV version censored parts, I used the blu-ray version. In fact, my version is LONGER than the TV version!
APOLOGIES: The source I used for the TV version was not that great. It was PAL formatted (which wasn't an issue). However, it had a lot of "noise", and I don't have DNR capabilities. And keep in mind that color-correcting/color-blending is a bit difficult with such a LQ source.
I had to resync the audio on the TV version I had, because for some reason audio was WAY out of sync.
Also, my source for the TV version had Swedish subtitles. And it has a big "4" on the top right corner (indicating a TV-channel).
2+hr Workprint?
I remember reading somewhere that a 2+hr work print had leaked, and is now rare. Do any of you have it? And if so, would you like to share?!
Anyways, PM me if you want the project. Also PM me if you think you have any better sources for the TV cut. But if you have that 2-hr work print...oh boy that would be awesome.

Blade Runner 2049 (Extended HFR project) |

For a while I was toying with the idea to extend merge BR2049 shorts with the main feature, and make it all run at 60fps. It's not everybody's liking, but after watching Gemini Man and Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, I always wondered how many other of my favorite movies would look. Of course any TV nowadays can do interpolation in realtime, and for the most part that is enough, if one likes that sort of thing, but this was just for fun, to see what AI can add to the idea.
Due to the heavy nature of the project, and working in TIFF 16bit sequence, and limited HDD space I currently have, I ended up doing sections of the project in batches and then merging all into the final result. It's a work in progress, and I would deal with the audio after the whole of video is done, as some adjustments would have to be made to accommodate constant 60fps.
For this the following was done:
- all 3 shorts upscaled to 4K with the AI, and stereo audio remastered to 7.1
- open matte version of the main feature upscaled to 4K with the AI, native 7.1 audio used
- edits were made (a simple addition of the short before the start of the movie, really, nothing too fancy, just to have all in one place)
- everything converted to BT2020 colourspace (graded, until it looked good to me, I do not have extensive knowledge here, or equipment here, rather just enough to please me, not trying to impress anyone in particular)
So yeah, 'will see how it's going to end up to be, working on it extremely slow, due to other commitments, but trying to stick with and complete this one, this time. Much of projects I end up abandoning, as I get bored... The main challenge, I think I would have (maybe due to doing video in sections), was that audio will perfectly match from 23.976 to 60fps, as all the historical attempts I made proved that it's matching 59.94 but, appears not quite for 60fps. Not a huge deal, just some additional timing will have to be done.

Forbidden Zone and Animatrix potential projects |

Hey good people of this forum. I am bouncing 2 ideas in my head, and am generally interested how more enthusiastic of you would approach this.
- I am thinking in near future to start a project of extending the Forbidden Zone as that is one of my favorite movies, of all times. I would use the colorised version of this movie, as that is the one I saw first, and think the movie is even more crazy in colour than black and white. However, the deleted scenes are in black and white, so I would either use them in as is form, or would attempt (and probably fail) to colorise them to match. What do you think? Is there any particular tool you would use for this, or how would you approach it?
- The 2nd idea was about somehow integrating Animatrix into main Matrix trilogy, in chronological order, or any other way, that makes sense. Kind of like having a Kill Bill anime moment in the middle of the movie or some such. It's fun for me to think about it. How would you approach it, and where would you place these segments, assuming your are adventurous enough to see it as a good addition?
Thanks, for any opinion that could help with this.

Color Accurate Monitors |

So I'm thinking about upgrading my monitor to one of these ultrawides. I have a work machine and personal machine and like the idea of a monitor with KVM switching capabilities, picture by picture, USB dock etc. I noticed at the lower price point, like Philips, they cover 84% of P3, whereas at double the price, like BenQ, they are pre calibrated and cover 98% of P3.
From a video editing point of view, does this matter enough to pay double the price? I obviously do color grading but not so much by eye, I'm using references from other sources, lumetri scopes etc. I wonder if the higher end models are aimed more at people/professionals shooting their own footage/photographs and then grade it? Anyone use a calibrated color accurate monitor?
Happy to pay for the top end but don't want to throw away money on something I don't really need.
Thanks

In This review of the history of the world part 1 blu ray this is the only negatives |

In This review of the history of the world part 1 blu ray this is the only negative is this issue really that bad?
Not all is well, though, as some shots have a hazy/soft appearance along the edges, slightly reminiscent of 'The Final Countdown,' while other shots have serious haloing issues, so thick and dark that they cannot be missed. Brightness can flutter in shots, while matte paintings stand out due to their dullness compared to the rest of the picture. Soft shots are occasional, though few and far between, while dirt is kept to a minimum. A solid transfer, though far from sparkling.
Are this issues easy to over look and if not is it possible take the blu ray source and clean up these rough spots?

Strange Days (1995) 2.39/OpenMatte Variable AR |

A quick and dirty project here, 2.39/OM Variable AR of Strange Days.
Lossless cut/edit with VideoReDo; the base was Grym rls (20th Anniversary 2nd Kino, 23.976), all POV playback scenes* replaced with Amazon OM (24, remuxed to 23.976). Due to difference in frame rates, 40something frames were cut from OM shots (mostly from end cuts and whip-pan blurred frames) to keep the sync with 20th Anniversary DTS-HD MA. Subtitles ported from Amazon rls (sans web-dl all caps English).
*all POV playback scenes that characters are watching; the two brief shots of Jericho killing after Tick was found brain-fried and in Max's end exposition were narrative flashbacks and are left in 2.39.
