Interestingly, despite AOTC having been apparently shot mostly on cameras that only had REC709 color gamut, it seems that many SFX expanded to wide gamut colors, at least for cyan/aqua/turquoise type colors and they seem to have also maybe gone in post and made the Pantoran(?) on the left of the first set of images look way more intense than sRGB/REC709 standard gamut colors can show.
Also interesting and weird, is that the UHD release, although it should be able to show wide gamut colors easily, does not seem to show these wide gamut cyan/aqua/turquoise colors much, if at all, and it almost seems like they locked the post theatrical release workflow for AOTC (and think maybe all three prequels) into standard gamut REC709 at some early point and are now stuck with it?? Either that or maybe the transfer to print film simply way hyped up some of the colors in that part of the spectrum and that is not how it was intended to look even if it was how most people saw AOTC most or all of the time. But it sort of seems almost like they clipped the colors at some point and got stuck with that unless they go back from scratch and rebuild all the post theatrical changes made to the prequels?
Here are some demos that show the differences between how AOTC looks when you have wide gamut color palette available vs. when it is restricted to sRGB/REC709 color palette (of course you need to use fully color-managed browser/viewer and have a wide gamut display set to wide gamut display mode with proper display profile installed in order to see the differences, and in some cases, to even see the WG labelled images properly at all). For each pair SG is first and WG is second (should be obvious on a properly set up wide gamut display):

The Warriors (1979) Theatrical Original Mono |

I imported the German Mediabook release a few years ago, which does contain a 2.0 track, but I'm not sure on the source used. I don't believe it is a simple mixdown, but I also don't think it's the original track.
I'm looking for the early laderdisc mono, or DVD track if the latter is confirmed to be the original track.

Sources Used for comparison (available)
- Criterion UHD Blu-ray
- Criterion HD Blu-ray
- BFI Blu-ray
- ESC Editions (France) UHD Blu-ray
- Criterion DVD
- BFI PAL-DVD
Sources Unavailable
- Laser Discs / VHS (as mentioned above)
I have been breaking my head on this, as the BFI Blu-ray and the newly released remastered version UHD Blu-ray from Criterion has muffed audio. If you notice the specs below
1. Criterion Blu-ray 1080p -
![[Image: 5yzmyc.png]](https://files.catbox.moe/5yzmyc.png)
The audio present with the Old school Criterion Blu-ray is the best, so good that it actually beats the Criterion DVD. You may notice a low pass filter here, but the CC DVD has more of it. Probably the only reason of it being the best audio choice as of now. The depth in dialogues are much clearer and has details very noticeable.
2. Criterion DVD -
![[Image: ci5ym0.png]](https://files.catbox.moe/ci5ym0.png)
Could have been an easy win, but due to the low pass filter being very significant and lying on the audible range, One could easily differentiate in the audio loss and quality.
3. Criterion UHD -
I'll keep this as simple as possible, Audio is botched, you could find that out from the score at the samples provided below. Went under heavy noise reduction and has details missing!.
4. BFI Blu-ray -
![[Image: 603n7v.png]](https://files.catbox.moe/603n7v.png)
The audio presented in the Blu-ray is of 2.0, but after the inverse check it's out to be the mono!! So downed to 1 channel for a better reference.
Well, the same as above, the only difference is that there is a tempo change and a possible shift.
5. ESC Editions (France) UHD Blu-ray - Same as above.
Samples - https://mega.nz/folder/tyoDjLwb#OU0-TuzpxtCtfw2tbL7MAA
The samples consist 10 minutes audio of BFI, Criterion Blu-ray, Criterion UHD Blu-ray. The audio/volumes are matched at the same levels in-order to get a taste test
Regards
6. BFI PAL DVD
![[Image: wvuswm.png]](https://files.catbox.moe/wvuswm.png)
Thanks to M.A got my hands on the BFI PAL DVD, processed the audio to match the sound levels, and after isolating the frequencies for both criterion and BFI PAL DVD can confirm the hiss present in the BFI PAL DVD doesn't really add up any extra details. So more on after Criterion BD still is the best audio.
So I managed to sync the Criterion audio to the Criterion UHD, France UHD & BFI Blu-ray. The edits had to be done manually as sources were not frame accurate. (frame drops etc.)
If you want to check it out, PM me for the link.

The Dark Crystal (1984) 1999 DVD mixes (5.1, 2.0, Isolated Score) synced to UHD |

The 1999 DVD contains what should be the original 70mm/35mm mixes, in addition to including an isolated score.
There is, however, one issue. The 5.1/2.0 have an error in the credits where a bit of music from later is duplicated earlier. Ideally the 5.1 would be patched with the 2007 remix, (where the music here is correct,) and the 2.0 patched with the isolated score. But I do not currently have access to that remix, and getting the score patched in just right is a bit outside my area of expertise. If someone else here wants to take a crack at it, feel free. Otherwise, these are still at the very list similar to the original mixes, and lack the revisions from later mixes.
Note: I didn't really sync them, because they already seem to match up without any adjustments. Hard to be sure though, as the remixes are all slightly out-of-sync, and trying to match lipflaps of puppets doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
