  Program/Settings for watching in VR
Posted by: Wak Nanook - 2025-08-22, 06:18 PM - Forum: Everything else... - Replies (21)

In my personal opinion, what's great about watching movies in VR is that you can align yourself with the optical axis of the lens, creating a true (looking through a window effect.) You can also enlarge the screen to such a degree, that you start to inhabit the space of the image, depending on your comfort/preference of course.

I prefer the sweet spot of minimal eye/head movement with maximum immersive size.

My plan is to create a series of 4:3 BD + DVD hybrids for watching in VR. 4:3 is very close to the IMAX aspect ratio of 1.43:1, so hence, in theory, you're creating an IMAX version of the film.

Here's what I use.

Program: Whirligig (Most Customizable/Adjustable program I've found)
Mode : Cinema

Window Experience Settings
Size = 3.7
Distance = 3.8
Tilt = -2 (Will need to adjust so centered for you)
Horizontal Curvature = 70
Vertical Curvature = 30

In Movie Experience Settings
Size = 4.7
Distance = 3.8
Tilt = -2 (Will need to adjust so centered for you)
Horizontal Curvature = 70
Vertical Curvature = 30

Whirligig offers several different media formats for playback. Select the one that works for you.

Please feel free to join the discussion.

Hey guys, just stumbled on your site and wanted to say a quick hello.  Long time film enthusiast with a particular bend toward nostalgic 80s and 90s flicks.  Thanks for all the hard work you guys do, I had no idea there was such a grassroots effort going on.

Hey there, I'm a member on a few other sites like OT.com and TSWT Forums and I've joined up here as I'm looking for some theatrical audio tracks to pair with my UHD/BD collection. I've seen that there's quite a few of these projects on this site so I can't wait to check some of them out!
