  RoboCop (1987) - 1.66:1 Director's Cut Preservation
Posted by: izzybell - 2026-03-12, 02:00 AM - Forum: Released - Replies (1)

The Criterion Collection releases (DVD & LD) of RoboCop are the only releases of the film to be in a "Director-Approved" aspect ratio of 1.66:1. While this claim is dubious as the Arrow's 4K transfer is in 1.85:1 and is also labeled as "Director-Approved", this still marks an interesting release for RoboCop. I used the Criterion DVD video and simply cropped and linearly upscaled the video to 1080p without AI use as the master has a lot of grain already that would get destroyed in an average upscale environment and because my PC is simply not that powerful to do so. While the image is still in standard definition essentially, it no longer exhibits letterboxing. I also decided to sync the Criterion Laserdisc PCM track, the commentary is left as is from the DVD. I may revist this project in the future for a more fully featured update.

Video
1080p up-converted Criterion DVD

Audio
English LPCM 2.0 Surround
English Dolby Digital 2.0 (Director's Commentary)

Subtitles
English SDH

Available in a BD-50 compatible MKV, for all forum members new and old.

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace on Laserdisc
Posted by: Kameraposti - 2026-03-11, 06:09 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (1)

Hi
Audio on this one sounds great but requires lots of work to synch to UHD. Theatrical presentation does not have all the scenes included on dvd. Worth it or has someone already done the heavy lifting? :-)

2001 a space odysey 70mm raw cinema dts mix
Posted by: Kameraposti - 2026-03-11, 06:06 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (1)

Hi
Is anyone familiar with this one? I have the .aud files. Worth to synch to UHD?

Ok, it's a 7.0 mix. A bit louder and maybe a bit wider (far field) than the "original" 5.1 audio from UHD.

Oliver & Company original 35mm 1988 film print
Posted by: filmgeek1999 - 2026-03-10, 05:11 PM - Forum: Movies, TV shows and other - No Replies

Contrary to popular belief, Oliver & Company by Walt Disney Pictures was not released from its original 1988 35mm film flat negative on all home video releases. The film uses the 1996 remastered 35mm print for its theatrical rerelease . They did not release the original film print from the 1988 original release was because Disney had a policy of moratorium of only earning revenue from older movies when they are released. That is why it never went on home video in 1989 because of revenue risks. But when The Little Mermaid was released, that all changed. While the film itself is same in content and length (no deleted scenes) in both rereleases, the home video version keeps the 1996 remaster to this day even on bluray. However somehow Disney used the original 1988 35mm print or telecine of the movie industry a France 1997 VHS, 1997 and 2004 Argentina VHS. I wonder why they would do that and not release the original theatrical transfer in the U.S. Again the home video and digital version of Oliver & Company did not use the original 1988 film negative. Thus far the films’ official visual quality remains the highest in its laserdisc and DVD releases. The bluray release was a botched mess. The details were unrecognizable. It seems that Disney messed up the film recently because they don’t care about it anymore due to it’s underwhelming box office performance and poor reviews. This is why I am requesting for any remaining unused or used 35mm or 16mm film copies of Oliver and company. If possible, could you inform me where I could find the physical copies of the 35mm of the film? Could you also inform me if you previously performed a full scan or will you do one in the future and sent it as digital video. Therefore I would finally be able to enjoy the movie as it would look from 1988. It’s an underrated film.

Here are the France VHS, UK 35mm bootleg and U.S. laserdiscs for the discussion.

  Master and Commander tweaked audio
Posted by: Kameraposti - 2026-03-10, 02:28 PM - Forum: In progress - Replies (8)

Hi
This movie has great audio but it could be better.
I’ll try to make it sound better :-)
I’ll start with dtsma from bluray and replace the SW track with the one from dts dvd.
Then I’ll increase the stereo separation of the mix - dtsma is very narrow compared to for example Matrix Cinema DTS so thats my goal.
Then remove the muddines of the center channel - for some reason the higher freqs have been neutered and that makes the speech sound like its coming from a box.
I’ll give an update once I have ”a working prototype” Smile

  Inside Man (2006) Open Matte

brilliant heist spirals into a hostage situation.

Sources:

Starz Open Matte 1080p (main video)
HDTV 400p (logo removal)
BluRay 1080p (DTS audio and AC-3 commentary)
DVD (named chapters)

Workflow:

HDTV was upscaled to 1080p to match the open matte and used when the Starz logo needed removing using a matte.

There were 2 scenes that featured a PSP video game that were filmed only in Cinemascope but were zoomed to fit the height on the open matte so the BluRay was used instead.

The BluRay DTS and AC-3 were added as well the DVD named chapters.
The video was aligned to match the BluRay making it easier to add additional audio tracks.

The Open Matte increases the height without any cutting of the sides.
