[Cancelled] Ravenous (1999) (Video Fix and Color Correction)

Ravenous (Video Fix and Color Correction v1.0)

Been thinking about a project of Ravenous (1999). Curious to see if any interest.

I really enjoy this oddball film. I didn't see it in theaters assuming, despite the great cast, its was just gory, dumb mess of a film. The trailer didn't do it any justice. After getting the DVD in 1999, I found that it was those things but it was also a fun black comedy and pseudo-western.

The original US DVD was a terrible non-anamorphic master. After buying the PAL DVD from the UK and the Itunes HD; I still found both based on the same terrible master and thus lacking. So color me surprised to hear that Shout was releasing it on BD. Well once again the same 20 year old master was popped out on disc.

The transfer is soft and fuzzy, lacking any sort of HD details. In fact doing the old up/downscale resolution test and comparing it to the Itunes HD, I doubt this BD resolves anywhere north of 720p. Adding to that BD is full of oversharpened and sometimes frozen grain and has some CRT red.

So I've been playing around with this for awhile, trying to dig details out of this. I removed the old bad grain, upscaled details to 1080p and 4K. Sharpened lines, regrain and color correcting.  I wouldn't call this amazing HD for sure but I think it is better then what we got.

The Ugly Dachshund - Original Mono
Posted by: stwd4nder2 - 2022-02-14, 03:08 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (4)

So I purchased the R1 DVD to sync the audio to the HD web-dl. However when it arrived, I noticed that despite the listing and even the back of the box, it had a DD 5.1 track and no mono/stereo. I thought maybe I had some newer issue but I came across this review that also mentioned their copy having 5.1 despite the case saying it was mono.
Does anyone know if there's a release with the original mono? It never had a LD release, and I'm not holding my breath for a BD. There was a VHS release, but I'd rather not go that route as I don't know about the audio quality on it, and I'm not equipt to capture it if anyways.
If anyone has any more info on foreign DVDs (or the ability to do a good VHS transfer if it comes down to that) let me know. I'd really like to restore the audio to this very underrated Disney film.

Toy Soldiers (1991) - Theatrical Trailer | Fan Remaster | HD
Posted by: bendermac - 2022-02-13, 10:38 PM - Forum: Released - Replies (1)

Welp, the US trailer is finished. Would've loved to get my hands on the HD trailer from US Blu-ray to increase quality in some aspects. But maybe in the future I can get my hands on it. I'm not that happy with Island World logo and it's nowhere to be found online in good quality. I had to re-create it from scratch. Hence me wanting the HD trailer for the proper logo.

Anyway... This is a 100% re-creation of the original domestic trailer. All text was closely matched. To find the proper font was much harder then I thought. It's close enough Wink

Enjoy Ok

PS: Soon I'll finish the german trailer for this movie, which is different to the US trailer. Stay tuned.

Greetings fellow fan editors and fan edit aficionados...

I go by the name of RedSun61524 and I've been an admirer of fan edits since The Phantom Edit way back when. Over the years I've found one fan edit site after another and followed everything I could, learning to do fan edits myself along the way with the help of the vast knowledge of fellow fan editors. I've also learned quite a bit about content, intent, and how things flow and don't flow. I'm very appreciate for everything that's done on this and other fan edit websites. The vast amount of fan edits out there have enriched my life and provided a great deal of entertainment. I'm looking forward to being a part of this community.

Best regards,

  DCP Rips
Posted by: stwd4nder2 - 2022-02-08, 05:47 PM - Forum: Capture and rip - Replies (14)

I'm looking for information on some of the DCP rips that are out there, specifically around where they came from and how they were ripped.

The only ones that I've seen out in the wild are Apocalypse Now (which looks to be a legit DCP) and Hateful 8 (which seems to be debatable on weather it's from a DCP or not). If there's any others please let me know. Were these releases from a DCP sent to theaters, that was somehow intercepted and decrypted? Or was it just someone involved in encoding the DCP that leaked it before it was encrypted. Cracking AES is no easy task, I'd imagine if it was figured out that would be public information by now.

On a related note, if it was possible to rip a DCP, would it be possible to rip the audio in a way that preserves the Atmos data? From what I understand the home and cinema versions of Atmos are different codecs, but the object data is compatible with both.

I'd love to know if anyone has any more info on this. And if there's any info you'd like to share that isn't public for whatever reason feel free to PM me.

Per a previous conversation, its seems that the French DVD of HB has some unique, possibly theatrically accurate colors. So I converted the PAL disc to 23.976 ran it through some filters and then upscaled that DVD for a possible future project.

For audio, I just grabbed audio and subs from the Criterion DVD.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (Project CRT #8)

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (Project CRT #8 v1.0)

Part of the Project CRT, for more background read here:
https://fanrestore.com/thread-3228

To quickly recap, many late 90's/early 2000s HD, DVD and even LD masters have a significant red/magenta push on modern flat panels. It is assumed that this is caused by them being mastered on older CRT monitors which had a green and blue push. This project attempts to fix many of those old masters by making them look how the color technician would see them on a CRT master monitor. Not necessarily more theatrically accurate but hopefully closer to what the colorist wanted and hopefully more pleasing to the eye.

So this is the Arrow copy of Banzai corrected to look how it does on my Sony BVM monitor. From the original BD I only had the PCM 2.0 Dolby Surround.

What's a simple way to re-encode DD stereo in DD 5.1?
Posted by: Warm Gun - 2022-02-07, 07:55 AM - Forum: Audio and video editing - Replies (8)

I need to change a 192 kbps Dolby Digital 2.0 track to 448 kbps DD 5.1. I looked around for a way to do that a while back, but couldn't find a good program.

It's for my Aeon Flux DVDs. When ripped, the opening and endings (credits) are separate files. I know how to link them so that the separate files play together during playback. In MKVMerge, you go to Output > Precious/Next Segment UID. The problem is the 5.1 tracks. The OP and ED are only in stereo. When I link them, my receiver automatically switches from stereo to 5.1 during playback, meaning when the OP ends and the episode begins. But it doesn't work if I'm upmixing the DD with Dolby Surround. The sound just becomes silent after the switch. The 5.1 also incorrectly shows as 192 kbps stereo unless I go into Properties, because my media player is going off what the first of the linked files shows, which doesn't matter but bugs me anyway.
