Best way to manage variable frame rates?
Posted by: alexp2000 - 2022-06-10, 12:40 AM - Forum: Converting, encoding, authoring - Replies (2)

Hey all,

Got some NTSC DVD's I've ripped and am looking to edit/encode but they have variable frame rates. I've tried encoding in Virtualdub but it changes the frame rate to a constant 29.970 and introduces noticable stutter.

Just wondering what the best way around this is if anyone can help?

Thanks

Killing Zoe Director's Cut & Theatrical Cut Special Edition
Posted by: alleycat - 2022-06-09, 04:26 PM - Forum: Released - Replies (14)

Killing Zoe has been released on blu ray in France and Japan as the Director's Cut. These releases do not contain subtitles for the French dialogue sections, they only contain 5.1 audio and they have a washed out color grade. There is also a UK blu ray of the Theatrical Cut which is reported to be similar to VHS quality.

This project is an attempt to fix those issues. The original Dolby Surround track has been captured from the laserdisc (thanks @williarob). The 5.1 from the blu ray has been downmixed to a 2.0 track using the Dolby Pro Logic I encoder in BeSweet. These two tracks have then been merged, using the LD for the majority and only reverting to the BD for the extra scenes. I tried to match the levels you may notice some changes, but I think it sounds pretty good. The majority of it is Dolby Surround.

The color has been taken from the laserdisc. The laserdisc does not look perfect, it's a lot better than the blu as it has nice warm and bright colors, but it might be a bit too much for some people. Truth be told I have no idea how this movie is supposed to look, I did reach out to the director but did not hear anything back. I think the LD is the best reference, although I did run it through a CRT LUT first to tone down some of the red.

The Blu Ray also suffers from blown highlights, particularly lights during the bank. I did try to patch this in from the DVD but I found it very difficult and did not get satisfactory results so there have been left as they are in the blu ray.

The subtitles have been retimed where necessary, including some brand new translations by @Stamper. There is a sub track for just the French sections and a full SDH track with the French and English sections.

Since it's only available on an awful looking UK Blu Ray I've also included the theatrical cut, that uses the complete LD track. The blu ray has been cut to match the laserdisc and where necessary a few DVD shots have been used. However as this DC is really just additional violence I don't see a need to revisit the TC, but it's there for completists.

Also I noticed the subtitles differ between the DC translation and the LD translation - there is a scene where one of the characters tells a joke and in the LD he talks about a woman's belly button, in the DC translation he talks about... well something else. So I have used the belly button version for the TC subtitles and the x rated version for the DC subtitles.

So hopefully this is a much better presentation than the standard Blu Ray.

  LaserDisc dual mono tracks
Posted by: Turisu - 2022-06-08, 09:07 PM - Forum: General technical discussions - Replies (19)

It's been observed by myself and others that dual mono tracks on LD always have a minor volume difference between the L and R channels. I believe the reason for this is to prevent everything being sent to the centre speaker by a Dolby Pro Logic receiver.

Dual mono tracks on modern formats don't seem to do this and have identical L and R channels. So my question is; are modern receivers able to distinguish between plain 2.0 stereo tracks and matrixed DPL 2.0 tracks in a way that LD-era amps could not?

The reason I ask is that I've previously been 'correcting' all of my LD mono tracks by deleting one channel and then duplicating the other prior to muxing. But I'm worried that by doing so I'm dooming everything to the centre speaker on a multi-channel receiver. I only have a 2-channel set up currently so I'm unable to test any of this for myself.

  Dumbo (1941) - BD/DVD mono
Posted by: NeonBible - 2022-06-06, 07:59 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (1)

Hello

Does anyone have the Dolby Digital 2.0 mono track from the 70th anniversary Blu-ray or DVD?

I have the older 60th anniversary DVD which contains only the 5.1 remix. I don't know what the 70th DVD looks like, but 60th hasn't been grained scrubbed like the Blu-ray.

Thanks.

How to post videos that use pieces of copyrighted content
Posted by: captainsolo - 2022-06-06, 03:19 AM - Forum: Everything else... - Replies (8)

Hi all,
I've been working on a goofy idea for a joke video but am worried about posting it on Youtube. It involves doing a redub of a film. (which I used to do in college for a laugh) I'm only doing selected short scenes and cutting around using the entire sequences. I'm also doing all the audio myself without anything from the film. The goal is to make it like an old incomplete workprint with a different temp ADR audio track.

Has anyone ever tried to do something like this? I'm just terrified of getting copyright strikes. I guess it just depends on if the owner is overzealous or not about taking things down.

(CANCELLED) The Warriors German Super 8 Scanning - Funding Assistance
Posted by: alleycat - 2022-06-05, 02:10 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (7)

A few years ago I purchased a German Super 8mm release The Warriors. I think the time has come to look into getting it scanned. This will be a professional scan not one of those all in one units you get off ebay.

The approx cost for the scan is going to be $320 so I'm asking if any members wish to donate. I say approx as I don't know exactly how long this will run for, it's 3 x 110m which I think comes to 23-26 minutes per reel so somewhere between 69 and 78 minutes long. If it was 80 minutes the scan cost would be $320.

The print has German sound and the scanner isn't able capture this (it can be done externally for extra cost) but I'm not sure how sought after that will be.

I'd plan on cleaning it up as much as possible and syncing up as many languages and subtitle tracks as possible. I've processed a scan one before so I have a little understanding of what I'm doing.

Please let me know if you would be happy to donate and if so how much - if you would prefer to keep it anonymous drop me a PM.

This is an example of the Super 8 set:

And these are some images from the actual print:

Just to confirm the print is currently being looked after by another member who purchased it from Ebay German for me so I have not actually seen it, however I am told it was in extremely good condition.

  Manual spot removal software?
Posted by: Nick_M - 2022-06-02, 03:57 AM - Forum: General technical discussions - Replies (7)

A lot of the silents I fix have sloppy spot removal that results in frozen cloning from adjacent frames, like this:[Image: dxIvg1C.gif]

I want to clone over frozen repairs, not from immediately adjacent frames as seen in this gif, but from arbitrarily distant frames to maintain motion. I also need to align/transform the patch to the new frame and have control over brush softness, like in Photoshop.

What are some software options that will let me do this? Preferably affordable or with student licensing. PFClean and Resolve Studio look close, but I can't tell if their manual tools are still automated. I don't want the software hunt for dirt, but only clone the area I select.

Video Looking for film grain overlay plates?
Posted by: Bilbofett - 2022-06-01, 11:49 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (4)

I'm looking for 4k grain reels (vids) I can use opacity to weave into my movie, something like 35mm, low-light, medium and bright scenes (perhaps).
Anyone know where to look for stuff like that? Not asking for warez, btw
