  Trying to date film prints
Posted by: captainsolo - 2023-04-07, 05:38 AM - Forum: General technical discussions - Replies (4)

I recently saw a print of Barry Lyndon and wondered what the print date was. My guess was that it was from the 1999/2000 era of prints made around EWS and Kubrick's death.

The info I got was that it was stamped Agfa-Gevaert between sprockets and had blue edges. So I guess it's from sometime in the 90's or so then?

Been gone for a while, but I'm back now. I will soon commission a mod project for the PC version of Resident Evil 4 remake where you will be able to play as The Terminator (with his first grey punk jacket outfit). This legendary movie is approaching it's 40th anniversary, so as a long time fan, I would like to contribute.

Low budget movies with great storylines, anyone?
Posted by: mrs1 - 2023-04-01, 01:38 PM - Forum: Presentation - Replies (8)

Hello everyone,

I really love movies, and when you love movies you've seen them all, box office hits and B-movies and all sort of independent movies.

And if I really love a movie, I watch all known versions, including fanedits!

I really like digging unknown gems, for example 2 movies that are really good and most people haven't watched are Freaks and Mortal.

I also love low budget movies with great storylines. They Live anyone?

All the best,

Mike Smile

  HDTV and Web-DL Preservation Project
Posted by: PDB - 2023-03-29, 03:55 PM - Forum: In progress - Replies (46)

Recently I have been trying to get my files organized at home. That's coming after I lost a lot of files in a HDD crash. As I've been going through some video files I've found some HDTV rips and iTunes downloads that don't corresponded with their Blu-ray counterparts. So my first thought was about preserving and upgrading these files. The problem is a lot of these files are small and have a lot of issues like pixilation, compression artifacts, EE, etc. So end results may vary.

My goal is to clean up as best I can, the digital artifacts, possibly upscale and preserve these files with their existing colors. Maybe adding some audio files I can.

This is (randomly) what I have found in my collection so far that I believe are unique transfers:

2010 (same colors as the DVD, different colors compared to the BD) - Done
20000 Leagues Under The Sea (different transfer compared to the BD?)
Alien (different colors compared to the BD/UHD, probably a 1999 era Japanese transfer)
Aliens (different colors compared to the BD, probably a Quad era transfer, overmatted to 1.77 with more picture)
Bram Stoker's Dracula (different colors compared to the BD)
Dial M for Murder (1.33 Version)
Duel (1.33 Version)
Doc Hollywood (different colors compared to the BD)
Foreign Correspondent (from Criterion but a pre-restoration transfer)
Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (different colors compared to the BD)
From Russia with Love (different colors compared to the BD)
Goldfinger (different colors compared to the BD)
Gunga Din  (Not on BD?)
Highlander (a semi-US theatrical cut)
His Girl Friday (different transfer compared to the BD)
Horror of Dracula (different colors compared to the BD? Not sure)
In the Mouth of Madness (different colors compared to the NL BD and I believe the Shout BD)
K2  (Not on BD?)
Krull (same colors as the DVD, different colors compared to the BD)
Lawrence of Arabia (same colors as the DVD, different from the BD/UHD)
Panic Room (2.35 Version) - Done
Slaughterhouse-Five (different transfer compared to the Arrow BD?)
Saving Private Ryan (different colors compared to the DVD and BD)
Star Trek Movies (the Sky transfers)
The Blue Max  (different transfer compared to the BD)
Two Mules for Sister Sara (different colors compared to the BD)
Zodiac Theatrical Cut

Photo Blade Runner (1982) White Dragon Cut
Posted by: TomasVolley - 2023-03-27, 12:11 AM - Forum: Official and unofficial releases - Replies (8)

As many of you probably know there is a fan version of BR but with added scenes and new artwork.

It is not just BR game scenes and photos added, it is really well done.

Some scenes are posted on YT. You can check out Blade Runner White Dragon Cut 5 | Chapter 13 "Leon Hiding on the Ceiling"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qU0aQX3g...kazuchoice

The project has been in the making for 12 years by kazuchoice. Evidently a version 5 is scheduled for 2024.

But does anyone have version 4?

To my eye looks incredible and I do not want to wait one year.

Thx for any help

Integration of an element in a scene?
Posted by: framemaster - 2023-03-25, 03:52 PM - Forum: Restoration guides - Replies (7)

I'm trying to integrate gaston's missing chair on the UHD and BD.
I isolated the chair from the blu ray 3D and I try to integrate it into the UHD but I don’t know which is the most suitable tool.
I tried with premiere pro and chroma key effects, but the results are not great

The missing chair (UHD / BD) :

BD 3D :

My integration of the chair on the UHD (Premiere Pro WIP) :

The legs of the chair cross the character.

I can't properly put the chair behind Gaston and Lefou on Premiere Pro.
I think the only solution would be to clean up every frame, but that would take way too long.

If I can't integrate the chair on the 4k, I'll just use the scene from the 35mm scan when it's funded.

Saw (2004) OG Opening Logo DIY
Posted by: stwd4nder2 - 2023-03-24, 04:55 PM - Forum: Released - Replies (2)

*edit* I'm retarded and mixed up the LG logo with the one used in the later Saw movies. I'll be on the lookout for that logo in 4k HDR but until then this is project is on hiatus

The UHD of Saw is overall very good, but annoyingly it uses the newer Lionsgate logo instead of the older one that was used theatrically and on other releases. If you're familiar with the old logo, and the Saw films, you'll know that the old logo is much more thematically appropriate to open the film.

Well I recently picked up the UHD of The Cabin in the Woods and noticed it had the original logo, in Dolby Vision, with an Atmos track making it perfect for replacing the one in Saw. So here's an easy guide for doing so while keeping the DV date and the Atmos track intact.

Step 1
Download the logo here
I already did the hard part of trimming the logo out of the movie and syncing up the commentary tracks. The Producers commentary doesn't start until the Twisted Pictures logo so I just downmixed the Atmos for that. The James Wan commentary plays over the opening logo, so that needed an offset to play properly.

Step 2
Trim out the old logo from the Saw UHD.
Add your UHD to mkvtoolnix-gui, then under output>split mode choose "by parts based off timestamps". Then under parts put 00:00:20.646-01:42:52.000. Multiplex into a new file.

Step 3
Add the SawOP.mkv to mkvtoolnix-gui. Then right click on it and select "append files" and select the file you made in step 2. If keeping the commentary tracks make sure they're in the correct order.

Step 4
multiplex and enjoy!

I'm not familiar with the mkvtoolnix cli, but there's probably a way to do all this in a single line script. If I ever bother learning it or someone who knows it more wants to do it I'll update this post.
Now if I can just get a hold of the Cinema DTS discs for this we can have a definitive UHD release  Tongue

  Merging 16:9 and 4:3 Footage
Posted by: alleycat - 2023-03-23, 03:51 PM - Forum: Audio and video editing - Replies (12)

Just wanted to get a feel for what the preferred approach would be on this. I've got a project in the works that's combining 1:78:1 HD blu ray footage with 4:3 additional TV footage. Keeping toying with the best way to approach it. The running time would be around 4 hours, 2 hours of 1:78:1 and 2 hours of 4:3.

Option 1 would be having a shifting aspect ratio throughout. That would preserve as much of the picture as possible, but it's going to be quite jarring given there is so much 4:3 footage.

Option 2 would be cropping the 1:78:1 footage so it's the same aspect ratio as the 4:3, that way there is a consistent aspect ratio throughout.

Of course Option 3 would be to do both Option 1 and Option 2 - so people have the choice - but it's more work.

Thoughts?
