The Matrix - regraded, v2.0
#81
Green: I can add this to the whole; if someone would like to suggest an RGB value for that green, it would be useful!

If the fleshtones don't count, why the police lights should do? Wink

Nope, Tom, it would not work.

I think what he wants could be achieved by increasing saturation for greens more than by increasing greens.

Yep. Look at the opening text and boost the greens saturation until it matches the 35mm.

Let's say that the last attempt (TEST2+green) is a nice compromise; its grading is not that perfect, so let's say that even if film is used as reference, result is as it's used as "inspiration"! Big Grin

Still, A LOT better than greener-than-green BD:

Am I imagining it or is the color kinda ... "soft"? Like the chroma was strongly blurred? For example the lips don't really stand out anymore like they did in the old one. Or am I imagining things?

I really don't remember the black and white levels so badly crushed in theaters. There is shadow detail missing and the whites seem to blow out in places.
If that's from trying to match the 35mm, I would say either it was a bad print or there was an error made while scanning it. I've always been suspicious of that transfer.

The DVD really is VERY close to what the film looked like theatrically.

TEST1 luma is very close to film, while TEST2 luma is based on BD, and then modified... so yes, the colors are different; while TEST1 is closer to film, I think TEST2 is niced - again, if you ethically can stand on a "inspired by" regrading! Big Grin

TEST1 obviously looks much better to me, if not for the artifacts. Just look at Neo's lips, for example.

Here's a silly suggestion: What would happen if you were to use the luma regrade as in TEST1, but then, in an attempt to eliminate artifacts, do ANOTHER layer of color matching - from the BD to the result of the first matching, thus making two layers of matching, possibly eradicating some artifacts?

Also, outside of that, rather than adding a green tint, you should just increase the saturation of the greens, so that you don't end up adding green were it shouldn't be (mostly outside the matrix). Noticeably, your sample makes the pure whites somewhat minty. Just look at the opening text and boost the greens saturation until it matches the 35mm.
