[In progress] Hellraiser (1987) [Project: Celluloid]
#11
My hint: find out whichever version is closer AND consistent with the scan images; then, from here, try to find the "sweet spot" setting, to get it even closer to the scan images, then use that as a color reference; I think it will be closer to any guess, and surely much faster! Wink

Personally, what I usually do is put all the 5 images into one image, both for test image and reference, and then just let it render a lut for all together.

Great project, love the first 2 Hellraiser films. I assume you have the LD spoRv, did you cap the entire thing? It really does look a "hell" Wink of alot closer to the 35mm.

I have both since... forever? Like, 1995 more or less! Eek
This was not my rip, though, but I can vouch it was made pretty well.

I have some of the DVD releases, if needed for color references.

Oh ok thought that was from you. Are you going to cap it knowing what we see with those 35mm pictures?

When I'll be able to locate the disc AND get my old PC resurrected (or get a new capture card for the new one), I could always do that; think, though, that the quality of that edition is rather low, and, even if eventually captured using a better laserdisc player, capture card I don't think it will be much better as color reference, because the actual rip is rather good, indeed! Plus, IIRC, mine had a mild laser rot problem... Sad

Can't believe I didn't think of doing that. The next time I get a chance, I'll probably do that to create a base-line LUT for the shots I have zero references of, and then use the specific ones created for the specific shots.

Da-Dum-Tcsh.

I should probably mention that the LD, unfortunately, looked almost desaturated more often than not. It really took me back when it reached the Pinhead confrontation in the hospital BECAUSE it suddenly had a huge color difference even, and not only that but as you saw it looks fairly accurate.

If you could send it to me in a PM, I certainly wouldn't mind having a peek at them to get a general idea of their color schemes. If you can't do that, then see if you could at least snapshot the five frames (doesn't have to be exact) that I used from the start and post it here?

The fact is, laserdisc, as analog medium, didn't "like" too saturated colors, hence usually you get something around 75% saturation of what you find on DVD (even if later released faired better, though); also, the capture card saturation setting could be set too low.
Try to increase it up to 133% - I'd go no higher, hoping the capture card setting was set correctly, more or less. So, I'd increase saturation without be too worried to get it "wrong" - unless you will exagerate, though! Wink

So I thought I'd test that out to see what'll come of it. I will say, it certainly helped in the real-world areas, bringing back some colors to the real-world shots but not quite well enough. It does make them feel slightly more comparable in the least. Funnily enough, it oversaturated the Hospital - Pinhead scene. Interesting results all things considered though.
