[Released] Mad Max (1979) original color timing & mix
#81
Thanks!

Actually, I tweaked the saturation to be as much closer as possible to DVD - +10% added to the regrading result! Eek
I'll let the encoding end and take a further look tomorrow - I could always add saturation later, if really needed.

Is it me or the HD framing is a little off?

I know the european disc is a bit zoomed, but it looks more balanced, especially on top.

Do you mean UHD framing? It has "just" more image on all sides, so how could be off or not balanced?

Sample looks great. It's a close match to the dvd and the saturation looks correct to my eyes. Wonderful stuff.

Yes, like the Blu-ray, I feel the UHD maybe shows more image than what was supposed to be seen in the theaters.

Many times, there's dead air over the heads, whereas the Warner DVD looks balanced.

How were these cinemascope films shown in theaters? Weren't a part of the image on all four sides cut off?

Depending on how the screen is matted (and whether it's done properly) the framing can vary a great deal. This would be accommodated during filming somewhat and compositions are designed to look good framed tighter or more zoomed out. The differences between the DVD and UHD are pretty minor in the scheme of things and neither looks wrong. TV framing has a 10-20% safe area border to accommodate overscan; the largest differences shown in the thumbnail comparison are about that. If anything, the DVD looks too cropped in those shots; you're supposed to have some decent headroom to get proper rule-of-thirds framing.

Encoding finished; started to review it (up to about half) and it seems it's very good! Apart two or three shot of the Nightraider who are too red (but it was the same in the DVD), saturation is right; no artefacts spotted as in the first version; frame composition looks perfect to me - it's not like an open matte version, where you can indeed "feel" there is too much "air" on top of the actors, sometimes. If someone thinks that get, let's say, 10% more image on all sides is wrong, just switch one your overscan, and voilà! Instant CRT framing! Big Grin

I'll write more when I'll finish to watch it - maybe this evening, maybe tomorrow...

This look yummy. Will you do a 1080p encode?
