Per a previous conversation, its seems that the French DVD of HB has some unique, possibly theatrically accurate colors. So I converted the PAL disc to 23.976 ran it through some filters and then upscaled that DVD for a possible future project.
For audio, I just grabbed audio and subs from the Criterion DVD.
Video:
A upscale of the French DVD of Hard Boiled
Audio:
1. Dolby Digital 1.0 Chinese Mono (from the Criterion DVD)
2. Dolby Digital 1.0 English Mono (from the Criterion DVD)
3. Commentary (from the Criterion DVD)
Wow, looks amazing.
This release is certainly the closest to the 35mm print I saw.
Which as far as I know was a Tartan (the original distributor in the U.K) U.K release print from back in the day.
I'll dig through my stuff for my custom subs.
They're based on the Tartan video re-release, with a fresh translation.
I believe the criterion are just dub titles!
Although I might be wrong, a few years have passed since I sucked up all the information.
But there was a reason I used the Tartan DVD.
This looks pretty good PDB. Not usually a fan of upscales, but those colours do look quite good!

I think I have your custom subs as they were when msp used them for his custom (which ultimately became the HKR blu-ray), but I think you said that he edited them a bit to Americanise the English?
If you ever need some other DVDs of that movie for any future project. Give me a shot, I have some different DVD releases of that movie in my collection. Maybe there is something interesting for your future project(s) on my shelf.

Looks similar to one of the Tartan DVDs I have which was transferred from a low-con print.
My favourite subs are the burned-in ones from the PAL widescreen VHS/LD, I'm guessing they are the original theatrical subs

I'd like to temper expectations, it is after all an upscale and not HD. Also I tend toward a more film like look over artificial sharpness, so there is that. Best to look at it more like material for a possible future project.

Well crap. Just checked and they are dubtitles. I must of forgotten about that. I was hoping they were more "original" like The Killer subs having the Dumbo lines and all that. Sadly, I cut the French DVD (at 23.976) down a few frames to get it in sync with the Criterion. So might have to redo the render if there are new subs. Appreciate you looking, CSchmidlapp

Appreciate it MrBrown. You know I will ask I would love to get every Canto mono soundtrack I can to compare them at some point.

Yeah, I was hoping for original, original here. For HK films I love both accurate subs and the $700 crazy ones from original theatrical runs.
