Not as much I like other movies in my collection . But, for sure, it's one of my all time favourites. It's just great art of work.
One of the classic John Woo movies that aged just so well.
Also one of those movies that somehow never got an overall satisfying official release.

This release is certainly the closest to the 35mm print I saw.
Which as far as I know was a Tartan (the original distributor in the U.K) U.K release print from back in the day.
I'll dig through my stuff for my custom subs.
They're based on the Tartan video re-release, with a fresh translation.
I believe the criterion are just dub titles!
Although I might be wrong, a few years have passed since I sucked up all the information.
But there was a reason I used the Tartan DVD. I think I have your custom subs as they were when msp used them for his custom (which ultimately became the HKR blu-ray), but I think you said that he edited them a bit to Americanise the English?
That's right bud!
He considered them to British lol.
I do understand, as it was a U.K translation.
If you have them to hand, could you send them to PDB for me?
I'll have them backed up in some state somewhere, but my main hard drive with the Woo projects on them died!

Mr Brown was a close ally in my Original Trilogy 'Woo' projects
In your opinion, which one sounds the best to your ears?
I've always found The sound on the Cantonese mono pretty bad!
Switch it to the english dub and it sounds great.
Even the print I saw, the audio just sounded like the theatre had pumped up the bass.

(2022-02-08, 04:57 PM)PDB Wrote: Well crap. Just checked and they are dubtitles. I must of forgotten about that. I was hoping they were more "original" like The Killer subs having the Dumbo lines and all that. Sadly, I cut the French DVD (at 23.976) down a few frames to get it in sync with the Criterion. So might have to redo the render if there are new subs. Appreciate you looking, CSchmidlapp
I don't think you will have much trouble, as bar the start times, I'm pretty sure the other prints matched up pretty well.
The French DVD was the exception with this and had a few more frames here and there, sometimes in the middle of a scene. The opening Teahouse shoot-out being the worse if I remember correctly.
All this talk is quite nostalgic for me

Good to know as I'm not a subs guy. I've only recently been interested in have subs for my projects so my experience is weak and its 100% needed for this since I suspect few of us can speak Cantonese.

I understand the parameters of your project good sir.
Trying to put together the perfect version of this is not what you have set out to do, and as others can attest to in this thread, when it comes to films like this you can really get bogged down in the details.
The multiple masters worldwide supplied by the rights holders have been a headache for fans putting together definitive versions, as they all differ slightly and require much work to make all the assets conform.
Which is not what you are doing here.
I'm pretty sure the subs I worked on match the Criterion timings when you align the start point correctly.
I'm happy to help out syncing if you send me a rough render of your project

I'll upload it for you to see. Would be nice for a second opinion anyway, to see if it is worth even releasing.
