[Cancelled] Evil Dead Regrade (Japanese Herald Laserdisc)
#81
So there seems not to exist any 1.66:1 version?

The colors have seen changing so much release after release, that all I care about now is that it looks good.

I do not remember any DVD release that is 1.66:1. The DVDs and BDs I know of are either 1.33:1 or 1.85:1.

There MIGHT be some releases that are 1.66:1 in some countries that do their own stuff, but I never stumbled acros anything.
Also there MIGHT be odd VHS or LD releases.
But that is just the "i never stumbled across one doesn't have to say that there are none, the world is too big to know every release" MIGHT.

The German Theatrical release is stated to have been in 1.37:1 back in the 80s before the movie got banned, and even stopped in theatres while projecting to get confiscated.

Was it shown theatrically at 1.66:1? Or is this another Robocop situation.
AFAIK all home releases were full frame until the Book of the Dead release. I actually have the Palace Pictures VHS from a job lot, I've yet to watch it fully as it's censored but I noticed in a brief section that I watched that the timing turns noticably green during one of the horror sequences, I wonder if it was like that on the print or it was added by the telecine

I think the 1.66 part comes from the making of Evil Dead book. At least that’s where I read it.

Realistically in America most theaters at the time wouldn’t have the gates for 1.33 or 1.66 projection. So it would be shown in 1.85 except for specialized theaters (like the premiere?)

1.66 would be a good compromise as the 1.85 is way too tight. Maybe someone can crop the 1.33 to see how it looks.

@PDB a long time ago I did an encode of the Blu Ray master in 1.66. Looked totally fine compositionally though I’m not sure as an OCN scan if the Blu Ray is more opened up than a print would have been. (For example, it has more image area than the Elite DVD).

That all being said, totally unsure about ever watching it at this aspect ratio except for a curiosity. It would have been very impractical for almost any theater to show it like that. Unless there’s evidence to the contrary for Evil Dead, feels more like a wish to have it in that ratio than a legitimate screening ratio.

If I recall correctly @See No Evil says on his site that the premiere ratio was 1.33…. And with the title Book of the Dead.

For starters, the ORIGINAL aspect ratios of The Evil Dead (1981) are 1:33:1 and 1:85:1, NO MORE, and those who say otherwise DON'T KNOW SHIT.

Second, NO VHS and NO LD preserves the Original Colors of the movie, even many DVDs don't either, THE ONLY TRUE AND EXISTING WAY TO WATCH THE EVIL DEAD IS THROUGH THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY TRANSFER MADE BY ANCHOR BAY / LIONSGATE.

It is the ONLY EXISTING version that preserves 1000% ITS ORIGINAL COLORS AND IS 1000% FREE OF ANY ALTERATIONS OF ANY KIND, THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY TRANSFER VERSION IS ABSOLUTELY, DEFINITELY, TOTALLY AND UNDOUBTEDLY THE ONLY EXISTING WAY TO WATCH THE EVIL DEAD (1981) IN ITS 1000% PURE AND 1000% PRISTINE FORM, CONFIRMED THE VERY SAME ORIGINAL THEATRICAL PRINT USED IN 1981 WITH 0000% CHANGES, END.
