Beauty and the Beast (1991) 35mm (help needed)
#1
I have the chance to get a German print of BATB scanned.

The film is accompanied by some features (short trailers “Jungle Book”, “Bambi” and the Goofy-cartoon “How to Dance”).
To finance the project, we would need 750€.

A grindhouse-version will be provided to donors shortly after the print is scanned.
A cleaned version might be added later, but that’s not sure.

This project will also tie into my other UHD Blu-Ray fix project. The UHD / BD has modified scenes (modified backgrounds, or removed elements) and a calibration that does not make everyone agree.
Only a 35mm print would correct this.

The 35mm version will have at least the following audio:
English (2.0 Laserdisc), German (2.0 optical), French (2.0 Laserdisc).
If all goes well, I could add European audio tracks that I own: Spanish, Portuguese, Italian 5.1, as well as English 7.1.

I specify that only donors will receive the file.
If you’re interested, please send me a PM !
Thank you to future participants.

Current total donations: 155€

If I may ask, can we donate, after we have seen screenshots from the scan and know that all went well?

The collector they're using only lets out good prints for this, so there's not much risk of the print not being good and as I understand it he owns two so if there was a problem with one reel I'm sure he could let out a reel from the other one for a rescan to ensure the scan is intact and complete. Ok, I just asked because I've been burned with Thunderbean scans.
First with Pinocchio that had some problem in a reel, then with Cinderella that was actually a 16mm print of low quality, then with Fantasia etc. etc.
I'll pledge 30 euros (I'll pay in a couple of days that I get paid).

I would definitely like to contribute. What's the minimum donation amount and what's the status of this project as of today?

No minimum amount Smile
I just saw that Originaltrilogy is blocked, I hope it's temporary. In which case I hope that the donors will have the good idea to come here

Why not just record the optical soundtrack off the print while scanning it? It would be a 4 channel Dolby A or Spectral Recording track which is so much better than the 2.0. You can take the two track and then matrix it using a prologic mix. Even a basic playback through a Dolby Processor can output the 4 channel. I can help with that if needed.

Unless the print has magnetic audio or some supplemental audio format (like Dolby Digital or Cinema DTS), the track will not be a discrete 4-track mix. The optical that's actually printed on the reel will be in Dolby Stereo, which is essentially a matrixed 4-track, which would require the scanner a proper Dolby setup in order to properly denoise and decode into surround.

This is why usually alternate audio sources are desirable since—depending on the title—they serve as a means of providing essentially a high-quality variant of the optical track (always supposing it wasn't filtered to hell), or better in cases where a discrete surround mix can be provided instead of matrixed (for instance in titles where they have their original 70mm 6-track mixes restored on Blu-ray).

And in this case specifically, if you recorded just the optical (regardless of whether or not the equipment to properly denoise and decode it is indeed available—though it is said to at least be provided in some form), you would be left with a German dub for an American title, so it wouldn't even truly be the original mix to begin with (though it may serve as a curio to see if the dub has changed on home video).
