Die Hard - New HD Master on Netflix?
#31
Sounds like he knows his stuff!

Last year mine was nowhere near good enough to share with you guys. I'd be too embarrassed.

Glad you got the LD tracks zoid, I went with the 44.1 in the end as the THX one had an issue 46 mins in.

It seems that this is a Christmas movie for everyone including me. That's pretty funny.

Remember the rumor is the widescreen LD is closer to the Dolby Stereo (matrix) released with the 35mm prints and the THX is more like the revised soundtrack of the 70mm prints making the widescreen a rarer beast. At least that was according to Disclord.

I have to try to capture the AC-3 track someday to see if it is 4.1 like it was reported at the time.

With regards to the audio, yes I believe you are right about the original widescreen laserdisc being the only source of the theatrical audio (Dolby Stereo). After that it all gets a bit vague. I've heard that the 70mm 6-track was a 'baby boom' mix with mono surrounds and 2 LFE tracks. Still uploading, my upload speed has throttled  Angry

It made me sad to think to Alan Rickman (r.i.p.) when I watched the Harry Potter saga few days ago... but I think watching Die Hard (again) could be a sort of homage to this great, but sometimes underestimated, actor! I remember some of his notable appearances in Robin Hood, Quigley Downunder and Galaxy Quest.

Eagerly waiting for your version!

The THX laserdisc was mono surrounds per the newsgroup postings at the time duplicating the 70mm mix and the THX PCM is a downmix of that. I just found my RF modulator so I'm going to have to test that.

Awesome projectOk

Looking forward to seeing your results. Don't worry about the little "glitch" of the slightly lower quality for a moment due to netflix compression. We have all had releases where we do a "final" encode and then realize that we missed something. This is why some projects end up having a version 1.1 or 2.0 or whatever... Either way, take it from a fellow project maker, we all appreciate the effort. If you choose to fix the "issue," awesome, if not, no worries. Keep in mind, that there may be more than just that one moment you missed and sometimes having others "proof" your work prior to release can helpWink

When it comes to sharing, please make sure NOT to post any direct links in the thread. References to places where project may be acquired is fine and the PM system is your friend. Thanx

This seems like the current place to discuss the sound mixes (though all due respect to the original thread here: https://fanrestore.com/thread-555.html).

Regarding the 5.1 (4.1?) from the THX laserdisc, is it not likely that the AC-3 on the first DVD issue (1999) is exactly the same? captainsolo seemed to think it was identical. Anyway, I'm going to buy an old copy and have a look - the surround activity should be a good clue. If it's any good, I'll have a go at syncing that...
