I've just watched it with the 1st PCM track. Sounds very good. The video master definitely reminds me of the 4K DCP I saw in September 2014. When I saw it then, with vivid colors and that golden hue, I already wished my Blu-ray looked the same. Now since this video from Netflix has a few flaws and doesn't seem to give so much more definition, it could be interesting to make the Blu-ray match this color timing. It also seems to me that the Netflix is a little more squished or maybe the Blu-ray was a bit too stretched vertically?

The local cinema will have several showings of Die Hard just before and just after the new year... Incredibly excited about seeing one of my all time favorite films on the big screen for the first time! Really curious to see how the master compares to the BD! (Never watched this Netflix version.)

My local also just announced a Xmas DCP screening...hmm...I wonder if this 4K will finally be making the rounds.

It wouldn't be too much bother for some of the big chains to arrange a few festive screenings of the DCP now, would it? Also I'm sure I read somewhere that the 4k was available to stream or download, possibly in that gap between 4k TVs and 4k blu rays when no one had anything to watch.

I got an early Christmas present today in the form of the Japanese Die Hard Trilogy THX laserdisc boxset
I don't know if this has been discussed before but the LD THX AC3 track from Die Hard is basically a discrete version of the PCM and is definitely a different mix to the first DVD. Hans' gun clicking comes from the right speaker as does Argyle loading the cassette in the limo, etc. It also sounds a lot like mono surround. Perhaps it is the 70mm mix?

The surrounds are mono so that's a pretty good indication that it's pre-remix. Haven't watched it through myself, yet, but the scenes that I've sampled sound nicely hefty! I've got a copy of the AC3 sync jonno made and it's definitely from the first DVD. Obviously the assumption at the time was that it was a port of the laserdisc which was fair enough considering the mono surrounds, but those sound effects have definitely been moved to the centre channel. Why, I don't know. Makes me want a copy of the DTS laserdisc that little bit more, but the AC3 will suffice. Plus the JP boxset is nice. |
