We're not in the case of a Delicatessen properly taken care of in France and sloppily done in the US as the distributor doesn't want to put money into a proper printing process to keep the look of the original film for a foreign movie that won't make a ton of dollars in the box office anyway.
Universal had the rights in the U.K. No 20th Century in sight on its original run and Video releases here.
Pretty sure it was the same throughout Europe?
