The Matrix - regraded, v2.0
#11
Boom

"Apologies, I could be wrong about this. After checking on my tablet and phone and computer, it appears as though it is still very green. My TV for some reason has decided to change this without me changing the settings. I think this is more likely a TV fault than a genuine change. Sorry guys."

I thought it unlikely that there was a new approved transfer.

There's a rumor Matrix might be released on UHD Blu Ray someday soon: http://www.4kfilme.de/the-matrix-the-dar...k-blu-ray/

When it's out it will surely get a rip or at least a capture soon. You will likely be able to use that for the regrade, with no highlight clipping problems. Smile (assuming they make it an HDR release, which I don't see why they wouldn't)

From what I understand, The Matrix was supposed to be released in UHD earlier this year and it didn't happen.

I wouldn't be surprised to see HDR in an eventual release, only because the film didn't go though post-production in 4k.

So while they can scan it in 4k, there isn't 4k of detail in the film stock and the special effects will be upscaled. HDR is a great technique to hide the fact that a movie doesn't need a 4k home release.

That said, HDR will screw with the picture even more and take it farther away from the theatrical look. I think fixing the colors on that version would be much harder.

I think it'll be much easier, if the so-far released HDR movies are any good measure. Firstly, you have at least 10 bit color depth to work with as a base. On top, you have a wider color space, which means that highlights aren't clipped where they were on the Blu Ray. Sure, the colors will be farther away from what we know, very likely, but they will be easier to get where we want them to be. I'll post a project as a demonstration of this in the coming months.

But without HDR this can't work sadly. And strictly theoretically, it's possible they do clip the highlights anyway. I can't imagine they would do that, but you never know with these people, hah.

From what I understand, the UHD was supposed to be released in November. Maybe it's just been postponed. One can always hope. Big Grin

I suggest you wait for the HDR release and then rework this back to the 35mm grading.

I've attended a 35mm screening a few months ago in the French Cinémathèque in Paris. Unless Stamper has information that I don't have, The Matrix never had a French reissue in the theater, and yet the print looked pretty much the way the Blu-ray does. Granted, the Blu-ray is greener in scenes the print was not, but overall, the Blu-ray color timing is not way off. And the print I saw was very different compared with the 35mm scan available on the Spleen.
