[In progress] The Matrix AAP-AR [EXPERIMENTAL VERSION] (three sources, new grading)
#41
I like it. Did you contemplate ditching the sides to get an IMAX version with the most shot image, but without the black angles?

That would mean 1.44 or 1.66 logo free? Watching the test clip, I find the changing angles bothering a bit.

Getting rid of the angles would lead back to one of the sources, so it would be pointless. I'm aware that changing angles is bothering, but the alternative is to use "ambilight" (which I don't like) or inpainting (which is unfeasible with such big area). So, angles or not angles, this is the problem! Big Grin

As written before, the composited image of the old grading (DVD+HDTV+ATV) is bigger than the new grading (BD+WEB+SDTV) as you can see in the next images:

[Image: The_Matrix_AAPAR_trisource_BD_grading.jpg]

[Image: The_Matrix_AAPAR_trisource_DVD_grading.jpg]

I like to get more image (and less black angles) but, even if a fullscreen DVD exists, that would replace ATV to get much better quality and color uniformity, the resolution would always be inferior to new grading, and I think contrast, too - yes, I know BD (WEB/SDTV) has clipping whites, but the contrast is much closer than DVD (HDTV/ATV).

So, unless some revolution (pun intended), the triple sources AAP-AR would use BD, WEB, SDTV; color grading would NOT be changed, to be in line with Reloaded and Revolutions.

Now I've found a way to get the image touches the borders, losing maybe 1% "slices" in few occasions - a small price to pay IMHO, at least unless a future autoalign script update would include this possibility.
There is still some minor alignment errors sometimes (admittedly, they seems very few), like in the following frame:

that would be simply solved using only dual source (losing a very small portion of top and/or bottom SDTV "slices"):

SDTV logo: unless a new source with the same grading and comparable quality (and eventual logo in a different place) would be found, there are some instances where logo is still noticeable

[Image: The_Matrix_123089_AAPAR_new_triple_complete.jpg]

the solution, as suggested before, could be to remove completely the top part of the image, but it will cut a lot of good image, too... so, I thought just to cut the top left corner which has the logo, to preserve the rest of the top part on the right of it:

yes, I know, a further black angle... still, a lot more image than cutting all top part!!!

I approve of this tinkering.

Latest plan:
  1. do pass 1 of BD + WEB (encoding right now) then pass 2 adding SDTV
  2. check which aligned shots are bad
  3. do pass 1 of SDTV + WEB then pass 2 adding BD
  4. replace bad shots on #2 with the latter, or just use #1 pass 1 (2 sources)
  5. check in which shots SDTV logo is still noticeable
  6. replace them with #1 but this time use SDTV without top left corner for pass 2
this seems the best plan so far...

Pass 1 done; I've checked some bad shots made with (BD + WEB) + SDTV, and the other method still retain some misalignement, and the added "slices" are really small, so I discarded the idea.

Revised plan: Big Grin
  1. do pass 1 of BD + WEB (done) then pass 2 adding SDTV (encoding right now)
  2. check which aligned shots are bad
  3. replace bad shots on #2 with #1 pass 1 (2 sources)
  4. check in which shots SDTV logo is still noticeable
  5. replace them with #1 but this time use SDTV without top left corner for pass 2

This is one of the many reason's im here on FanRes.
Truly amazing work.

Happy to know we are actually in four that think this could be an interesting, alternate way to watch a movie!

I briefly checked the first 15 minutes of the pass 2, and apart few shots where the logo is noticeable or alignment not perfect, it is very nice! Let's wait two days Eek for the whole encode, now.

Bad news: I made a mistake, so I preferred to wipe out the encoded pass 2 so far...
Good news: correcting that mistake lead to some better alignment.

Pass 2 encoding (re)started right now... let's wait (again!)

Latest plan:
  1. do pass 1 of (BD + WEB) (done)
  2. do pass 2 adding SDTV (encoding right now)
  3. check which aligned shots are bad, and replace them with one of the following
    • (SDTV + WEB) + BD
    • (BD + SDTV)
    • (BD + WEB) - which is #1
  4. check in which shots SDTV logo is still noticeable, then replace them with the #3 and eventually use SDTV without top left corner
#2 would be ready in few hours; now, if someone would help me with this project, the task consists in finding the start and end frame numbers of the following:
  • shots not properly aligned that would probably be fixed using (SDTV+WEB)+BD
  • shots not properly aligned that would probably be fixed using (BD+SDTV)
  • shots not properly aligned that would probably be fixed using (BD+WEB)
  • shots where the logo is clearly noticeable
I'll explain better what/how to check shots; it's an easy task, but very time consuming... if there is a volunteer, please write me a PM.

It's sad that you don't use plugin properly.
As I said before the easiest and only one way to merge two clips together completely correct is to use statFile and run analysis pass. Then check every scene in overlay editor with difference mode and edit overlay params if necessary.
Any temporary encoding passes is bad idea.
