Blu-ray subtitle conversion tool (sub2bd)
#31
Tested it out on a couple anime BD-Rs, and aside from a problem in one .sup file where the subtitles rendered way to big (which I believe was caused by me forgetting to change the video resolution from 0x0 to 1920x1080 in Aegisub), it seems to work great! I dunno how it works with stuff like karaoke effects (which I personally don’t use), but so far it seems to be a perfect WYSIWG solution for .ass to .sup conversion!

It even seems to eliminate the flashing/disappearing subtitles whenever there are overlapping subtitle timings! I used to assume that this was a limitation of Blu-ray players since it didn’t occur during BD playback on a PC, but it’s great to finally have a program that can handle overlapping timings and have it play correctly on a standalone player.

Only remaining problem, I now have a bunch of subtitles and BD-Rs that will now need re-authoring!

Awesome! I think the karaoke effects should be ok, as long as the font itself handles them and is installed on your system. You definitely need to make sure the resolution in the ASS matches your video res or it won't be scaled correctly. And yep, the non-flashing subtitles is why I put the effort in to make the GUI!

I have updated sub2bd to version 0.3. The only change in this version is that it now supports 4K resolution for subtitle rendering. Please let me know if you have any issues.

When playing on PS3 (used to use my Oppo but it's a 10-year old BDP-80 model and has started to not like BD-Rs), occasionally subs will get skipped. I know they're actually on the disc, as I can usually get them to show up if I rewind and play them again. Happens even when timecodes don't overlap.

I *think* I've been able to solve the problem by making sure that there's at least 100ms between non-overlapping subtitles, but any ideas for other possible solutions?

Thumbs Up
I've created an account awhile back, just to respond to this, but got distracted lurking on all the incredible work people have done here.

So thank you bronan for this amazing tool.

I always felt exporting to .sup was such a hassle and this is by far the most straightforward and reliable way to do it that I've stumbled into.

Cheers

Sorry, I meant to respond to this a long time ago and forgot. The time gaps are the only thing I know you can do. Did you ever figure anything else out?

No problem! The author of avs2bdnxml is the real hero, I just made the front-end to simplify it Smile

No problem, I usually just use my laptop for playback of newly-authored subtitled BDs before burning nowadays, so not too big a deal if PS3 playback isn't perfect.

I think 100ms might not quite be enough though, as I still occasionally get skipped subtitles.

Yea, I think 200 or 250ms was the sweet spot I found where I didn't have anymore issues.

Great, I'll give that a try next time.
