#11
I second what CSchmidlapp said. Go to the screening to enjoy it, soak it in! If something strikes you as being different from the home releases then please do let us know.

I wonder if someone here can create an edit from They Live! Bluray which is similar in terms of scratches and all those effects a not cleaned 35mm roll got?

You should check out the Italian blu-ray - it's far more 'film-like' that the Shout edition which has a lot of nasty digital effects:

By the way, there's a 4k remaster coming either later this year or next according to an article on blu-ray.com..

I didnt knew, they are going to rls a 4k Editon. Thank you for the info!

I knew caps a holic. I prefer in terms of quality the Shout Editon.

@JohnNada Do you have any editing software experience (Adobe Premiere Pro ect)? as I could probably show you how to do what you want to do yourself Smile
And like zoidberg inquired, what is the 'Carpenter Fanbase' you contacted?

Im just a Dubber and i also made a few uncut editions by using dvd sources in HD-Material.

Maybe you can clip the whole Movie man  Big Grin Na, i think its not possible right?  Cry Tongue

Guys thing is, i really like those 35mm print raw copies. They are so scratchy and used.. they're not edits btw.. the Ghostbusters Movie is a Copy of the 35mm print itself as i read. It gives me such a cinema experince watching a movie this way.. dont know. I like it. I love THEY LIVE! its one of my favourite movies

The 35mm scans that are out in the wild are only scratchy because they have been poorly handled over the years.

When you say 'Dubber', are you a somebody who translates foreign movies via a voice over in Afghanistan?
And what are the uncut editions you have created? I was thinking of a few DVD only extended cuts the other day that need preserving.

Replace Afghanistan with German or English but yes, that is what i can do. The chosen language is only a random pick by me ;-)

Ive only made a few Uncut Editions. Ive included the Uncut-Scenes from an Uncut-DVD of the https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050095/ into the Bluray-Editon for example and I also dubbed it.

I've always sort of wondered what They Live is supposed to look like. I don't think the current master in terms of color strayed very far–if it did–since it wasn't shot by Dean Cundey, so I wouldn't expect there to be heavy blues, and the snippets I see of 35mm film strips and lobby cards–if that even says much–don't suggest much blue or any particular added color grading judging from the generally neutral / naturalistic color scheme. I suppose that means that all that really needs to be done is some minor curve tweaking since I get the sense that the StudioCanal master is too low on the highlights and some messing with filters and etc to remove your aforementioned blocking?

I'm not gonna comment much further though since when it comes to this movie in particular since I've kind of sinned by never watching it in HD (first and only time I've seen it was on some crummy old DVD) and I didn't get a chance to see the new 4K master–unlike the other three in the collection ironically–when it was released to cinemas last Fall. I suppose now would be a good time to ask Tylerdurden389 about his 35mm screening back last July lol

Oh yes, I have no doubt that someone like you could fix the They Live 4K issues. Hell, I would even be willing to share my 4K rip for a job like that if anyone is interested. I ripped it to iso weeks ago. I believe the colors are overall fine but the macroblocking is the real sin with this film. Aside from the blocking on a few parts it looks very filmic and natural to me. No doubt due to a fresh 4K scan of the OCN as stated on the back cover. It has a PCM original audio mix but as bronan found out The Fog wasn't really it's original audio on the 4K. I am not sure if They Live is a downmix too or is a legit original mix.

Thanks, you put too much faith in me lmfao. Joking aside, I may take a little look into the movie and see what can be done. I admit I have no experience working with blocking removal but I'm sure I can find something on this forum that's useful for that. Color-wise, I may do the aforementioned tweak in the curve (supposing it doesn't clip anything) and maybe make minor tweaks depending on whether or not something further comes up (maybe I'll check the trailers as well). As for the question of whether or not the transfer sports the original audio mix, I would imagine that if it did (which I doubt), it'd suffer a pitching problem as well due to the whole US - UK framerate difference or something along those lines. So in short, I'd check either the Shout! Factory master or hope someone here has some laserdisc release or something. I gotta check if my old snapper-case DVD has anything useful although I doubt it.

I think it was determined over on the 'UHD to BD' thread that while the UHD encodes contained macroblocking, the blu ray encodes did not. So it may be a case of pick your poison

Judging from the trailer on youtube I would say there is a touch of the Carpenter blues in They Live. I would love to see a 35mm screening though.
